Augusta GreenJackets News Release
North Augusta, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets (Atlanta Braves) utilized four solo home runs to overcome the Carolina Mudcats (Milwaukee Brewers) in the series opener on Tuesday. Augusta (28-30) only needed four hits, all of which left the yard, to hand the Mudcats (30-26) their seventh straight loss. The GreenJackets became the fourth team in the history of affiliated baseball, including MLB games, to record four total runs on four solo home runs.
The GreenJackets sent out Jorge Bautista for the start, after he had dealt six or more innings in his previous two outings. After he retired the side in order in the top of the first, Augusta wasted no time in jumping on two-way player Quinton Low, as Ethan Workinger rocketed his ninth home run of the season to put Augusta on top 1-0.
Bautista escaped a bases-loaded jam with a double play in the second, before Jeremy Celedonio doubled the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the second to make it 2-0. Both teams would go scoreless in the third, before Ethan Workinger slugged his second homer of the game and 10th of the season to make it a 3-0 ballgame in the fourth.
Bautista cruised into the seventh inning, becoming the first GreenJackets pitcher to reach the seven inning mark since he himself did so in September of 2022. He induced two more double plays, bringing the GreenJackets' single game total to three, including one that allowed a run to score in the seventh to make it a 3-1 ballgame. In the bottom of the seventh, Celedonio hit his second homer of the game to make it 4-1.
Darling Florentino entered in the eighth and struggled, giving up two runs on two doubles while also walking two. He left the game with runners on first and third, but Chad Bryant needed just one pitch to get a line-out unassisted double play to first, becoming the first GreenJackets pitcher in over nine years to record an outing of .2 innings with one pitch.
Jason Franks came on to work the ninth, and despite giving up a double was able to notch his second save of the year. Bautista picked up the win, and his second quality start of the year, most on the team. The GreenJackets turned four double plays, a single game season high, while the 1:56 runtime was also the fastest game of the year. Augusta also matched their franchise record with the four home run game.
The GreenJackets remain at home this coming week to take on the Carolina Mudcats (Milwaukee Brewers), including the Augusta Pimento Cheese game and Father's Day. For tickets and information, click here: https://www.milb.com/augusta/fans/gj-homestand-preview!
