GreenJackets Held Hitless in Final Six Frames, Fall 7-3 to Mudcats

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: Augusta's offense came out firing but faltered quickly, scoring three early and none after the third inning as they fell 7-3 against the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday evening.
Augusta scored in the first inning for just the second time this season, with Jace Grady knocking an RBI single and subsequently scoring on a Drew Compton double to take a 2-0 lead against Carolina starter Daniel Corniel. Augusta would plate one more in the third, when Luis Sanchez's two-out double allowed Compton to score and extend the lead.
Corniel was pulled after the third due to a high pitch count, but the triumvirate of relievers utilized after him proceeded to blank the GreenJackets for the final six innings of the night. Bayden Root, KC Hunt, and Blake Whiting posted six hitless innings with a combined ten strikeouts, buying more than enough time for the Mudcat offense to activate.
Carolina finally broke through with two outs in the fourth, when right fielder Kay-Lan Nicasia hit his second home run in as many nights to bring the Mudcats within one. He was immediately followed by a double from Blayberg Diaz and a run-scoring triple from Miguel Briceno, who trotted home when the relay throw skipped into the stands. All four runs came against starter Davis Polo, who took the loss in his SRP Park debut to fall to 0-2.
The Mudcats would extend their lead further in the sixth via a run-scoring double play from Briceno, and added two more to push it beyond reaching against Will Silva in the ninth. An error on the pitcher and an RBI single from Juan Baez made it a four run game, where it would stay thanks to a clean ninth from Whiting.
Adam Shoemaker allowed one run in four innings of relief while striking out five and walking just as many, and has now allowed just two earned runs in 11 innings of work.
The win was granted to Bayden Root, his second of the year, while Polo fell to 0-2 on the young campaign in just his second start.
The two sides are back at it tomorrow at 7:05 for Teacher Appreciation Night at SRP Park, when 18-year old righty Didier Fuentes will climb the hill to do battle with 19 year old Bishop Letson in a battle of vivacious young arms. It's also Thirsty Thursday- at the park, with $2, $4, and $6 drink specials courtesy of PBR and Busch Light.
The GreenJackets are home all week long against the Carolina Mudcats, with tickets still available through Sunday. The fun-filled week includes Teacher Appreciation Day, Dinosaur Day, and Augusta Rams Night, where the 'Jackets take the field in special jerseys honoring the 1954 Augusta Rams and Leonard Hunt, the first Black player to play professional baseball in Augusta.
