June 2, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Columbia, SC: After the Columbia Fireflies (21-35) came to SRP Park in the middle of May and took two-of-three from the GreenJackets (27-29), the Jackets were able to come to Segra Park and win three-of-four over the Fireflies as Augusta took the series finale by a final of 5-2 on Sunday.
In the 1st inning, Columbia scored twice off Seth Corry, but both runs were unearned. Corry struck-out Chase Chambers, for what would have been the 3rd out in the inning. The catcher Andres Angulo blocked the swing-and-miss from Chambers in the dirt, but Angulo's throw to 1st base to complete the strikeout was air-mailed, and Ronny Mauricio scored from 2nd base, as Chambers went all the way to 3rd base.
A wild pitch then allowed Chambers to trot home, and the Fireflies jumped in front with a 2-0 advantage.
Augusta's offense broke out in the 4th. After Columbia starter Jose Butto did not allow a hit through the first three innings, Frankie Tostado tagged his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot, to tie the game at two. Nico Giarratano delivered an RBI single later in the frame and the GreenJackets had their first lead of the day at 3-2.
With two outs in the 4th, Anyesber Sivira rolled a groundball to the shortstop Ronny Mauricio, but he was unable to come up with it, and the error scored a run and the Jackets took a 4-2 lead.
Seth Corry went 5.1 innings, to tie his career high, but he left the game in the 6th with the bases loaded. Luis Amaya came out of the bullpen and would get two huge outs to keep the Fireflies from scoring. Corry ends his day without allowing an earned run, and he strikes-out six.
In the 8th inning, Dalton Combs delivered a big hit to help the GreenJackets extend the lead. It was an RBI single, the first RBI of his GreenJackets career, and Augusta grabbed a 5-2 advantage.
Between Franklin Van Gurp and Luis Amaya, the two arms finished off the game without allowing a run, and Augusta took the series finale, and three-of-four games from the Fireflies by a final of 5-2.
Player of the Game: Seth Corry, 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 6 SO
Despite the tough first inning, Corry responded in a big way. He tied his career-high with 5.1 innings on the mound, and kept the Columbia bats off-balance all afternoon as he earned his first win of 2019.
Tomorrow's Game: 7:05 PM @ Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies), McCormick Field, Asheville, North Carolina
Pitching Matchup: (ASH) LHP Nick Bush (3-3, 5.17 ERA) vs (AUG) RHP Keith Weisenberg (0-0, 7.11 ERA)
Keith Weisenberg will make his 3rd start of the season for the GreenJackets. Weisenberg was signed by the Giants after he was released by the Atlanta Braves over two weeks ago. The big right-hander went three innings in his first appearance as a GreenJacket on May 23rd as he allowed just one run. In his 2nd outing, he allowed four runs over 3.1 innings against the Greenville Drive on May 28th.
The Asheville Tourists will go with a southpaw in the 1st game of the series. Nick Bush will make the start. He was an 8th round selection out of LSU by the Rockies in the 2018 MLB Draft. Bush this season has 45 strikeouts to only nine walks. In his last start against Rome on May 28th, he went just 1.2 innings and allowed only one run. It will be his 10th start of the season tomorrow.
