Green Bay Blizzard News Release

Green Bay, WI -The Green Bay Blizzard ended their 2014 season on a high note with a resounding 52-35 win over the Bemidji on Aurora Baycare Field in Green Bay on Friday night.

Each of the three games between the two teams earlier this season had been decided by a touchdown or less, but the Blizzard left no doubt about who played better tonight. All time, the Blizzard are 1-3 against the Axemen.

The Blizzard (2-12) grabbed a lead early on over the Axemen (5-9) and didn't trail for the whole game in a dominating performance Friday night at the Resch Center. The Bemidji defense couldn't find a way to stop the Blizzard attack, and the Axemen offense was held in check most of the game, not scoring for nearly two full quarters.

Green Bay wasted little time in getting on the board as running back Lucien Walker scored the first touchdown of the night with a run from two yards out. After Bemidji missed a field goal attempt, Blizzard Quarterback Nate Wara led the team down the field and scored on a run from three yards out to give Green Bay an early 14-0 lead.

The Axemen wouldn't let the game get out of hand yet though, and answered with a touchdown on the first play of their next drive, scoring with 3:53 left in the first quarter. However, the Axemen wouldn't score again until 4:31 left in the 3rd quarter.

After a Blizzard field goal to start the second quarter, Wara scored two more rushing touchdowns and Green Bay entered the half with a 32-7 lead over the Axemen.

Bemidji received the second half kickoff hoping to get back into the game, but the Blizzard defense had other plans. On the first play of the second half, Bemidji Quarterback Josh Aakre fumbled the snap in the end zone and defensive lineman Paul Melicharek pounced on the loose ball for a Blizzard touchdown.

On the very next drive, Blizzard linebacker Nick Bonte forced Bemidji wide out Josh Jarboe to fumble and defensive back Demetrius Stone recovered it, giving Green Bay possession. Shortly after the recovery, Wara threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Avonte Jones to give the Blizzard a 46-7 lead with 11:35 left in the 3rd quarter.

Despite the huge deficit, the Axemen continued to fight and scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to dig out of the hole the Blizzard put them in.

Blizzard Quarterback Nate Wara finished with 167 yards passing and a touchdown while rushing for 48 yards and three more touchdowns. Running back Lucien Walker added two touchdowns on the ground, and Avonte Jones led receivers with 45 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Bemidji Quarterback Joshua Aakre finished the game with 192 passing yards and two passing touchdowns, and added three touchdowns on the ground. Former Blizzard receiver Ryan Balentine who leads the Axemen in receiving this season only caught two passes for 19 yards on the night.

The Green Bay Blizzard will certainly be pleased after finishing the season 2-1 against strong competition in Cedar Rapids and the Colorado Ice and look forward to building on this success next year.
