Great Falls Voyagers News Release

BILLINGS, Mont. (September 5, 2014) - The Great Falls Voyagers opened up their 2014 playoff campaign with a 7-3 loss to the Billings Mustangs Friday night at Dehler Park, to fall behind 1-0 in the best-of-three series.

After the Voyagers regained the lead in the fifth on back-to-back two-out run-producing singles from Tyler Shryock and Mason Robbins, Billings replied swiftly in the bottom of the frame. Brian O'Grady took Great Falls starter Luis Martinez (0-1) deep for a two-run shot, putting the home team in front 4-3.

Billings did not look back after that, as they added single insurance runs in the sixth and seventh frames before putting an exclamation point on their game one victory with four in the eighth.

Great Falls had one good chance to try and come back against the Mustangs bullpen, putting runners at second and third with one out in the seventh while trailing by two. Billings reliever Jordan Remer wiggled out of the jam however, collecting back-to-back strikeouts to end the last real threat for the Voyagers.

In the first, Great Falls took advantage of a Billings error score first. Robbins reached on an error made by Taylor Sparks, and Zach Fisher took advantage, doubling to right-center field to give the Voyagers the contest's first tally.

Billings answered with a run in the home half to tie the score. Brian O'Grady walked to start the frame, stole second, then went to third on an error. Great Falls got Aristides Aquino in a rundown with O'Grady on third, and during the play the Mustangs center fielder raced home to tie it.

The Mustangs then took the lead for the first time in the second. After Franklin reached on an infield single, Cory Thompson tripled him home to make it 2-1 Billings.

The Voyagers will look to stave off elimination Saturday as their series with the Mustangs shifts to Centene Stadium for game two. Righty Kelvis Valerio (0-1, 1.64) will get the starting nod for Great Falls, while Billings will counter with fellow right-hander Tyler Mahle (5-4, 3.87). First pitch is set for 7:00 and coverage will begin at 6:45 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
