Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 12, 2012) - Danny Rams capped off a five-run first inning with a grand slam to help the Fort Myers Miracle past the Bradenton Marauders 5-3 on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium.
The grand slam was Rams' first home run of the season and the third extra base hit of the season for the Miami native in two games. He belted two doubles against Palm Beach on Monday.
The five runs was enough for starter Cole Nelson and the Miracle bullpen. The Marauders scored three runs in the fourth to cut their deficit to 5-3, but Nelson settled down to get out of the inning and Jose Gonzalez and Dakota Watts pitched four scoreless innings of relief.
Levi Michael started the first inning rally for the Miracle with a double off of starter Colton Cain. He was quickly brought in on a line drive single to right by Jairo Perez to make it 1-0.
Oswaldo Arcia then reached on a fielders choice and moved to second on a single by Josmil Pinto. Anderson Hidalgo was plunked by Cain to load the bases and Danny Rams followed by driving a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to bring everyone home for a 5-0 lead.
Doubles by Carlos Paulino and Dan Grovatt and a pair of singles by Benji Gonzalez and Gift Ngoepe in the third led to three runs for the Marauders. However, Nelson got Mel Rojas to fly out to Arcia to end the threat.
Gonzalez pitched the sixth and seventh, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Watts collected his first save by giving up just one hit over the final two innings.
Nelson got the win to improve to 3-0 while Cain fell to 1-4.
Ngoepe went 4 for 5 in the loss for the Marauders.
The Miracle (26-36) have now won three in a row and four out of their last five. They will host the Marauders (26-39) again on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
Join the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald for the broadcast beginning at 6:45 p.m. on miraclebaseball.com.
