Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - The Durham Bulls and Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees have released their pitching matchups for the Governors' Cup Finals that begin on Tuesday, September 9th in Moosic, PA. LHP David Price (1-0, 0.00) will take the mound for the Bulls against LHP Chase Wright (0-0, 1.93) for the Yankees as the Bulls attempt to win their third Governors' Cup in seven years.
Price, the top prospect in minor league baseball according to Baseball America, pitched five shutout innings against the Louisville Bats in Game One of the Governors' Cup Playoffs as the Bulls won, 3-0. Wright pitched four and two-thirds innings against Pawtucket in their Game One matchup, allowing one run on four hits and five walks.
Game Two will feature 13-game winner Mitch Talbot (0-1, 31.50) against Yankees prospect Ian Kennedy (0-1. 2.57). Talbot was blistered for seven runs on nine hits in two innings of work as Louisville routed the Bulls, 19-3 in Game Two. Kennedy, the 4th best prospect in the Yankees farm system, went seven innings allowing two runs on five hits in the loss to Pawtucket in Game Two, 3-1.
RHP Jeff Niemann (1-0, 1.13) will take the hill against LHP Kei Igawa (1-0, 1.29) as the series moves to Durham for Game Three on Thursday. Niemann took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of Game Three against Louisville in Round One, while Igawa, the Japanese lefty that New York shelled out $46 million dollars to sign, allowed only one run in seven innings of work against the Red Sox.
Game Four (if necessary) will feature RHP Wade Davis (1-0, 1.50) for the Bulls against Yankees prospect RHP Phillip Hughes (0-0, 0.00). Davis pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits in the series-clinching win over Louisville, while Hughes, a first round pick in 2004 (23rd overall) and former top prospect for the New York Yankees, pitched brilliantly against Pawtucket in Game Four, going eight shutout innings allowing only four hits, no walks and striking out 11.
Durham has not announced a starter for Game Five (if necessary), but the Yankees have announced former Durham Bull Victor Zambrano (NR) will pitch for Scranton Wilkes-Barre. Zambrano pitched for the Durham Bulls from 2000-2003 compiling a 1-10 record. The Tampa Bay Rays traded Zambrano in 2004 to the New York Mets for ace LHP Scott Kazmir.
The Durham Bulls will host Games Three through Five at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on September 11-13. Tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com or by phone at (919) 956-BULL.
