Gossage leads Outlaws to sweep

June 14, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

Todd Gossage broke out of his slump in a big way with a 3-run double with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning to help the Outlaws take 5-1 victory over the Reno Silver Sox and a series sweep.

Gossage, who was mired in a 2-for-17 slump to start the season, went 2-for-4 with the double and 3 RBIs. Jesse Kovacs, who has also struggled out of the gate as well, went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Kovacs hit a sacrifice fly that scored David Pierson in the 2nd inning and followed knocked Gossage in after his double in the 7th inning.

The game started out a pitchers' duel between Chico's Steve Jones and Reno's Nick Moran. Jones lasted 7 innings, giving up just one run on 5 hits while striking out four. Moran pitched superbly through 7 innings, striking out six, but ran into trouble in the 8th and had to leave with the bases loaded and two outs. His replacement, Jason Martinez, gave up Gossage's double off the right field wall - all the runs were credited to Moran.

Reno left fielder J.J. Johnson left the game after fouling a pitch off his face. He left the stadium under his own power with the guidance of a paramedic while holding a bloody towel over his face. Carlos Madrid came in and finished Johnson's at-bat by swinging at the first pitch. The strikeout was credited to Johnson. The extent of Johnson's injury is unknown at this time.

The game featured several highlight reel defensive plays and neither team committed an error in the game. Outlaws left fielder Jason Van Meetren and center fielder Steve Boggs made back-to-back diving catches in the 6th inning and first baseman Scott Dragicevich stabbed a sure triple out of the air down the first base line an inning later.
