Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- Florida Firecats' fullback Steve Gorrie ran 57 yards on Saturday to set a new single game team rushing record.
Steve Gorrie ran the ball nine times for 57 yards against the Macon Knights on Saturday, paving the way for a 58-23 win for the Firecats. Gorrie also found the end zone three times, which ties the Firecats' team record. His last score was a bruising 15-yard scamper as time expired that saw Gorrie carry some Macon defenders into the end zone with him.
The previous single game record was 49 yards, which was achieved on April 6, 2002, by former Firecat fullback Johnny Frost. The most recent Firecat to score three touchdowns on the ground was former Firecat Derrick Taite.
Gorrie now leads the entire league in rushing. He has 25 carries for 135 yards (5.4 yards a carry) and five touchdowns. Johnny Frost holds the Firecats' season rushing record of 220 yards. Gorrie, only four games into the season, is only 86 yards short of breaking that record. Frost also owns the season rushing touchdowns record with twelve scores on the turf.
The 35-point win by the Firecats also set a franchise record. The previous record was a 34-point win over the now defunct Greensboro Prowlers in the Firecats' inaugural 2001 season.
Quarterback Ken Mastrole, who won Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Game Saturday, went 18-25 for five touchdowns and 226 yards. Offensive specialist Magic Benton caught three of the Mastrole touchdowns. Benton caught eight passes for 133 yards. He now leads the Firecats with 378 receiving yards. Cainon Lamb, U.S. Army Ironman of the Game, caught his team record tying 42nd touchdown. Lamb looks to claim sole possession of the record that he shares with former teammate Anthony Dixon this weekend when he takes on Dixon's new team, the Columbus Wardogs, in Columbus, Georgia. Also catching his second touchdown in as many weeks was Brent Burnside.
Roy Stabler won ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors in his 2004 debut. Stabler had the game's lone interception. The Firecats defensive front, led by Comone Fisher and Keith Drayton, caused problems for the Macon passing game all night.
The Firecats once again have the number one offense (287.8 yards a game) and defense (179.5 yards a game) for the league. They also have the number one pass defense, and they are number two overall in rushing yards.
The Firecats play game two of their four-game road trip this Saturday in Columbus, Georgia. The next home game for the Firecats is May 29 against the Memphis Xplorers. Tickets can be purchased by calling (239) 390-2287.
