Walla Walla Sweets News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Micah Gorman only threw 30 innings at VMI in the spring, while Joe DeMers threw 96 innings at College Park, but there was little difference in how they dispatched Yakima Valley bats on Saturday.
The right-handed duo threw a combined eight innings with just one run on four hits as the Walla Walla Sweets claimed a 4-3 victory over the Yakima Valley Pippins in their first of three games at The Orchard.
The Pippins (5-2) handed the ball to Central Washington Universtiy left-hander Mitch Yada (0-1, 3.17), who the Sweets (4-3) broke through against in the second inning. After Connor Kopach singled, he stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by cather Taylor Steen and scored on a base hit by Matt Whitney. Sweets catcher Michael Benson added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, then Trevin Haseltine added a double to score a run in the sixth, and Moe Handcox capped the Sweets scoring in the seventh with a single.
For Walla Walla, the start went to a right-hander in Gorman (1-0, 2.79) for the first time since his last start on Sunday. Gorman pitched his way out of a jam in the second inning with runners on second and third, and, after hitting Dayton Provost in the second, retired 14 of the last 17 batters he faced. DeMers came in and faced the minimum in the seventh and eighth innings, retiring the side in the eighth on just four pitches.
Jake Simmons came in for the final inning for the Sweets, and, after giving up three straight hits, including a two-run single to Jake Manson, he got a double play from the infield and got Tyler Friis to pop out to third to end the game.
Walla Walla and Yakima will play the second game of their set tomorrow at 5:05, with Trevin Haseltine getting the start for the Sweets against Darrion Simons.
