Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 9/9/08 - For the second time during the 2008-09 off-season, Gorillas Coach Tom Coolen signed a goaltender.
For the second time, Coolen mined the goalie-rich lands of Scandinavia to bolster the Gorillas net presence.
Sebastian Jonsson, a 21-year-old from Helsingborg, Sweden, became the Gorillas' second netminder under contract Tuesday. He will join Simon Nielsen of Denmark in the crease for Amarillo, as the two are expected to battle for the starting job during October training camp.
"Jonsson is a young goalie that played in one of the highest leagues in Europe last year," said Coolen. "With the potential to move up to the elite level, he played in some big hockey games for a very good team in 2007-08."
The 6'0", 184-pound backstop has spent the last four seasons playing with Rögle BK in Sweden. Last season, in Swedish Division 1 play, Jonsson posted a goals-against average of 2.64 and a save percentage of .903.
"Many people have given me very positive reports on him," Coolen added, regarding the goaltending prospect. "He has great potential to get better and I feel that he will be a vital part of a very good goaltending tandem in Amarillo this coming season."
Jonsson played against several former NHL players during the 2007-08 campaign, including goaltender Eddie Belfour, who starred with the Leksands IF club last season. The Swede becomes the 11th player under contract with the Gorillas for the 2008-09 year-Jonsson's first in North America.
