San Rafael Pacifics News Release
SAN RAFAEL,ÃÂ Calif.ÃÂ - Nick DeBarr was the tough luck loser tonight as he went seven innings allowing one unearned run. Stompers Erik Gonsalves matched DeBarr going seven shutout innings surrendering just four hits. The Pacifics tallied six hits in total but left eight runners on base, six in scoring position.
Nick DeBarr had a tough first inning, surrendering two hits, a walk, and an error but only allowed one unearned run as he battled with the bases loaded and made a great play on the mound on a putout to first. The unearned run was the only run both starting pitchers allowed through seven innings.
Pacifics Pitching Coach Jesse Smith was impressed with Nick DeBarr's first start of the season.
"I talked to [DeBarr] and reinforced him to trust his two-seam fastball and just keep pitching to contact. I just wanted to reinforce what he was already doing well", Smith said.
The game was highlighted by some stellar defensive plays by both teams including an amazing running catch by Zack Pace in the fourth to save extra bases and a 6-3 double play by Evan Boyd in the sixth inning.
The Pacifics led off the seventh inning with back to back singles by Pace and Matt Kavanaugh, Kavanaugh's hit coming on a bunt single down the first base line, but were left stranded as Gonsalves retired the next three batters including pinch hitter Maikel Jova.
After battling pneumonia this spring, Chuck Lofgren made his first appearance for the Pacifics coming into the game in the eighth to relieve DeBarr. After retiring the first two batters in the eighth, Lofgren allowed the next four Stompers to reach base on a hit by pitch and three walks tallying the first RBI of the game. Derrick Fox followed up the walks with an RBI single but the damage was limited as Chase Fontaine threw out Stompers Reid Chenworth at home for the third out.
Lofgren found himself in more trouble in the ninth allowing the first two batters reach base on a walk and hit by pitch. Dan Rogers came into to relive Lofgren and forced a groundball to third, which was mishandled by Troy Zawadzki. With the bases loaded Rogers struck out the next two batters and got Aritz Garcia to pop out in foul territory to Johnny Woodard.
Down three in the ninth Kavanuagh singled to center to lead off the inning but was left stranded as the Pacifics fell to the Sonoma Stompers 3-0. Erik Gonsalves notched the win moving to 1-0 on the season, DeBarr tallied the loss falling to 0-1.
After taking the first game of the series the Pacifics dropped the next two to the Stompers falling to 1-2 on the season. The Pacifics look to bounce back Saturday at Albert Park against the new Pittsburg Mettle. Game time is at 7:05pm.
