Goldie Lights Up Aces in Victoria Win

December 18, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

Victoria, BC, Canada - Wes Goldie registered his second hat trick in as many games as Victoria held off Alaska by a score of 4-2 in front of 4,162 at the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre.

The Salmon Kings (17-9-2) have won six straight games by a combined score of 27-7, while the Aces have lost seven of their last 12 contests after starting the year 11-2-1. For the first time all year, Alaska does not own the best winning percentage in the West Division, as Victoria now owns a three-point lead over the Aces and a four-point bulge over Idaho, 4-3 winners against Bakersfield Wednesday.

The first period remained scoreless until a simple chip behind the Alaska net led to Goldie's first goal of the night, a stuff short side against Aces netminder Jean-Philippe Lamoureux, who finished with 24 saves on 27 shots. Alaska forged a 1-1 tie when Alexandre Imbeault whacked home a loose puck out of mid-air with 3:48 left in the second period.

With the game deadlocked, the Aces inexplicably surrendered two breakaways in the first 71 seconds of the final period. Curtis Billsten beat Lamoureux on the first chance, whistling a shot over the rookie's right shoulder only 16 seconds into the final frame, and Goldie converted the second opportunity 55 seconds later with a deke to the backhand followed by a wrister just inside the right goalpost. Alaska surged late in the period, drawing to within a goal at 12:10 when Cam Keith found Colin Hemingway in the right circle for a snap shot that found the upper left corner. But Victoria goalie Todd Ford held sway for the remaining seven minutes, even when the Aces were awarded a two-man advantage with 1:48 to play and pulled Lamoureux in the final minute for a six-on-three situation.

Ford finished with 29 saves, the last of which led to an empty-netter as time expired to secure both the win and the hat trick for Goldie, who also scored three times in a 6-2 romp over Phoenix last Saturday. Alaska out-shot the Salmon Kings 31-28 and extended its penalty kill streak to 31, but now have gone just 1-for-23 on its own power play over the last four games. The Aces practice tomorrow before resuming their series with Victoria Friday and Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show coverage on KFQD AM 750 begins 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off each night.
