Alaska Aces News Release

Wes Goldie's second hat trick of the season helped the Alaska Aces start 2011 the same way they ended 2010 - with a win. The Aces ran their ECHL-best winning streak to a league season-high, eight games in a 5-3 win over the Ontario Reign at Sullivan Arena on Saturday Night. The Aces improved to 19-9-1 on the year, 8-1 on their current home stand, and swept the Reign for their third straight home sweep. The Aces will return home for three games next week to conclude their home stand, as they welcome in the Las Vegas Wranglers for the first time this year. The Aces and Wranglers will play three games on Jan. 5th, 7th, and 8th. Fans can visit the Aces at their Facebook page for more information, or call the Aces at 907.258.ACES.

The Aces struck first when Goldie pulled the puck from a scrum in the slot and wristed home a shot 12:33 into the game for the first goal of 2011. The Aces took the lead into the final minute of the period, but at 19:00 Jordan Morrison scored to tie the score 1-1 after one.

The Aces took control in the second with three goals to blow the game wide open. Goldie opened the scoring 33 seconds into the frame when his pass deflected off a Reign defenseman's stick and slid in past netminder Kellen Briggs. The Aces then struck twice quickly to extend the lead. First, Scott Howes scored a rebound goal on a power play at 9:35 and then Maxime Tanguay scored 25 seconds later to complete the second period attack, and give the Aces a 4-1 lead. Briggs was pulled and replaced by Beau Erickson following Tanguay's goal.

The Reign did not go quietly, and made a game of it in the third with two goals to close the gap to one. Morrison tallied his second of the game at 3:26, and then Chaz Johnson scored at 7:27 to make it 4-3 Aces. But that's as close as Ontario would get, and Alaska sealed the win with a Goldie empty net goal to complete the hat trick. Goldie now has 18 goals to lead the ECHL in goal scoring.

Gerald Coleman (14-7-1) made 16 saves on 19 shots for the win. Kellen Briggs (9-16-1) suffered the loss, making 19 saves on 23 shots. Erickson made 23 saves on 23 shots, and did not figure into the decision. The Aces power play went 2-8, while the Reign went 0-4. The Aces outshot the Reign 47-19 in the game.

The Aces will return home for three games next week to conclude their home stand, as they welcome in the Las Vegas Wranglers for the first time this year.
