Goldeyes Fall Just Short against Canaries

August 1, 2014 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes made it close, but not quite close enough on Friday night against the Sioux Falls Canaries.

The Goldeyes (44-27) made a late comeback and tied the game in the ninth, but the Canaries (26-46) would walk it off in the bottom of the inning to take the game 4-3 in front of 4,124 fans at the Bird Cage in Sioux Falls.

The Goldeyes took the early lead in the top of the first. Tyler Kuhn got on base on a single and then after stealing second, and taking third on a Canaries throwing error, he was driven home on a Josh Mazzola sac fly.

The Canaries would respond in the third when A.J. Kirby-Jones would hit a two run home run to put his team up by one. They then would extend their lead in the bottom of the sixth as they tacked on one additional run.

In the top of the eighth the Goldeyes were able to cut the Canaries lead on Tyler Kuhn's second run of the night.

Going in to the top of the ninth the Canaries still led by one, but Jake Blackwood would negate that lead with a solo home run that tied the game.

The Canaries, not wanting to go to extra innings, loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and were able to walk it off on a Chris Valencia RBI that brought Kirby-Jones around to score.

Both teams starting pitchers threw well, but both Kyle Ruwe and Chris Salamida earned no decisions due to the late game heroics from Blackwood and Valencia.

Alan DeRatt (2-4) earned the win for the Canaries despite giving up the Webb home run. And the Goldeyes Brendan Lafferty (0-2) was charged with the loss.

Despite the loss, the Goldeyes remain three and a half games ahead of the St. Paul Saints in the North Division title race.

The Goldeyes and Canaries will wrap up their four game series on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The Goldeyes will send Nick Hernandez (6-2) to the mound to face the Canaries Kyle Vazquez (5-5). The Goldeyes will then travel to Sioux City to take on the Explorers in a four game series that goes Sunday through Wednesday, before the return home on Thursday to take on the Wichita Wingnuts.

Tickets for all Goldeyes home games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
