Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes blanked the the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 5-0 tonight before a crowd of 6,015 at Canwest Park. With the win, the Goldeyes took a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five playoff match-up with their arch-rivals.

Winnipeg opened the scoring off Billy Weitzman in the first on four-straight hits. Cory Patton singled to lead it off and scored seconds later on a Josh Asanovich double down the left field line. Juan Diaz singled to send Asanovich to third, from where he scored on a Vince Harrison single. It became 3-0 with two out in the third, when Diaz hammered the first pitch he saw deep to left for his second home run of the playoffs, and then 5-0 in the fourth. Brent Metheny singled with two out and scored when Cody Ehlers hit his second home run in as many days.

As the Goldeyes pitched well and hit well, they also played some solid defence, highlighted by the first triple play in franchise history in the second inning. With Nic Jackson on second and Mike Coles at first, Ruben Salazar hit a ground ball to Harrison at third. He tagged Jackson, relayed to get Coles at second before Asanovich threw to get Salazar at first.

Andrew Cruse (1-0) was absolutely brilliant in getting the win, tossing the first complete game of his career and just the third complete game shutout in Goldeyes playoff history. He allowed just four singles while walking four and striking out five. Weitzman (0-1) took the loss, allowing all five runs in just four innings on seven hits, walking none and fanning none.

This series continues on Saturday at 6 p.m. Ace Walker is up for the Goldeyes while Matt Mossey replies for the RedHawks. Great seats starting at just $8 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or visiting ticketmaster.ca.
