
Golden Gloves Tournament Comes to Lubbock

LUBBOCK âThis year the Regional Golden Gloves boxing tournament will be held in Lubbock, TX February 19th â21st at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum sponsored by the Lubbock Cotton Kings. The Golden Gloves tournament serves as a qualifying round for the National Golden Gloves Championship where amateur boxers go head to head.
Divisions for everyone include a Jr. Olympic Division (ages 8-16), High School Division, College Fraternity Division, and Open Class (ages 17-34). In the Open Class there are two divisions, a Novice division (eight or less previous fights) and an Open division (more than eight fights). Each fight will consist of three one-minute rounds, and each division will receive a Regional Golden Gloves Award, as well as a Best Boxer Trophy.
Other awards include a Team Championship Trophy and a Sportsmanship Trophy. The Golden Gloves competition began in 1923 and was designed to help youth and promote amateur competition. A portion of profits will go towards further development of amateur boxing which encourages a positive lifestyle for today's youth.
Applications may be picked up at the Cotton Kings Office â 1309 University Ave. The deadline for entry is February 1, 2004, and the entry fee is $35. The Lubbock Cottons Kings are a proud sponsor of the Optimist Boys and Girls Club through the Golden Gloves Tournament. Tickets may be purchased through the Lubbock Cotton Kings Office or through any Select-A-Seat location.
