Golden Eagles Outlast DiamondDawgs, 7-5

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles defeated the visiting Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on Saturday night at East Field by a score of 7-5. The win opens up a two game lead for the final playoff spot in the PGCBL standings for Glens Falls, who is now at 12-10 on the year. Mohawk Valley drops to 9-11 and sits in fifth place.
Cory Folk (Buffalo) making his first start of the season for head coach John Mayotte's crew earned the win to go to 2-0 while Eddie Fitzpatrick (Brown) took the loss, dropping to 0-3. Jared Cheek (Georgia Southern) made things interesting in the 9th, but held on to notch his 6th save of the season.
The hosts struck first in this one as a pair of wild pitches from Fitzpatrick, allowed Emmanuel Forcier (New Mexico JC) and Ross Kivett (Kansas St.), who had reached on an infield single and walk, respectively to score.
The Golden Eagles added three more runs in the fourth to open up a 5-0 lead at the time. Back-to-back singles with one out by Alberto Morales (Clarendon) and Kevin Meyers (N.E. Oklahoma A&M) started the rally and Morales would score on an RBI single by Chris King (Louisburg). A two-run single by Danny Brennan (St. Louis) would then score Meyers and Forcier, who had reached on the walk.
Mohawk Valley added a pair of solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings, on an RBI single by Joe Carcone (Bryant) plated Hassan Evans. In the sixth, a long home run off the bat of Eric Helmrich (Marist) to left field, cut the score to 6-2 through five and a half.
It would remain that way until the top of the eighth, when Jordan Keysor (Skidmore) pitching in relief of Folk, gave up an RBI single to Jack Morrow (Young Harris) before giving way to Cheek. The first batter that Cheek faced, Chris Cruz (Cornell) was retired on a groundout, but brought home a run, making the score 6-4.
Glens Falls tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the same frame, with Forcier drawing a lead off walk, went to second on an error, stole third and eventually scored on a wild pitch by DiamondDawgs' reliever Nathan Harrell (Hinds CC).
Pitching with a 7-4 lead, Cheek had runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs, but an RBI single by Tyler Heck (Union (N.Y.) kept the game alive before Helmrich was rung up on three pitches to end the ball game and seal the victory for the Golden Eagles.
Glens Falls heads south to take on Albany tomorrow, while Mohawk Valley returns home to host the Mohawks of Amsterdam. Both games are scheduled for a 5:05 P.M. start.
