Glens Falls Dragons News Release
In a nail-biting game right down to the final out, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles edged out the Newark Pilots by a score of 5-4. Ross Kivett's (Kansas State) run in the bottom of the seventh inning off of a wild pitch from Pilots reliever Jimmy Wagner proved to be the difference as Glens Falls (11-9) came from behind to clip the Pilots (11-8).
Ryan Skoubo (Tacoma C.C.) earned his first career victory in his first ever appearance for the Golden Eagles, after just joining the team less than a week ago. Skoubo's win came in relief of college teammate Tayler Saucedo (Tacoma C.C.). Cullen Babin (Delta State) went six strong innings for Newark, but came away with a no decision as Wagner surrendered a run in the seventh.
Glens Falls struck first with a run in the first inning, as Emmanuel Forcier (New Mexico J.C.) came home on a sacrifice fly from Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis), who added to his league leading RBI total, which currently sits at 22.
Newark struck back in the second, however, as they posted four runs off of Saucedo. Josh Perez (Mississippi College) started off the inning with a single, before he stole both second and third base to get himself into scoring position. Perez scored on an RBI single from Adam Grace (Erie C.C.) After back to back fielders choices, and a walk from the Pilots, Brent Langston (Delta State) cleared the bases with a double, which put Newark ahead 4-1.
Glens Falls would claw back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third, as a pair of RBI singles from Chase Griffin (Georgia Southern) and Alberto Morales (Clarendon College) brought the Golden Eagles to within one run.
After Saucedo shutdown the Pilot's offense in the top of the inning, Buddy Putnam (South Florida) tied the game with his first homerun of the season, a solo shot to right, which knotted the score at 4-4.
The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, due to solid pitching from both sides and it was an individual effort from Kivett that made the difference. After drawing a leadoff walk off of Wagner, Kivett stole second, and advanced to third on an error from shortstop Josh Crowdus (Delta State). Kivett proceeded to come home on a wild pitch, which put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.
The game would not be without dramatics, however, as Skoubo allowed the first two runners to reach base in the top of the eighth inning. After Glens Falls closer Jared Cheek came on, a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Cheek struck out both of the next two Pilots hitters to escape the jam.
Cheek had a one, two three inning in the ninth, with the first two being via the strikeout. Danny Brennan (St. Louis) recorded the final out on a fly out in centerfield to give the Golden Eagles the victory.
Cheek earned his fifth save of the season as he pitched two scoreless frames to close out the Pilots.
Newark is next in action tomorrow evening as they travel to Elmira to take on the Pioneers.
Glens Falls travels to Mohawk Valley for a game against the DiamondDawgs, before returning home on Saturday as they play the same Mohawk Valley squad.
