NOLA Gold News Release

On Saturday afternoon, the NOLA Gold defeated Old Glory DC 25-21 to earn another win and keep the Gold's playoff push in full throttle! In a game with plenty of extra-curricular activities after the whistle, the NOLA Gold were able to keep their composure, allowing the team to emerge victoriously. Despite a late charge by Old Glory, the Gold's defense held on and did not relinquish the lead in the second half.

The Gold's season continues next weekend with the second game of their six-game road trip. The game time has changed, and the Gold will oppose the Toronto Arrows at Life University in Marietta, Georgia, on June 19th. The game will take place at 3:30 PM CST and be televised on Cox Sports TV.

In last weekend's match, the Gold quickly went ahead of Old Glory, with Juan Cappiello pushing in a try during the ninth minute. After two successive DC tries, the Gold needed to dig deep in one of their most important matches of the season. And dig in, they did! Hanno Dirksen broke away from the Old Glory defense in the 29th minute scoring a critical try for the Gold. Even after yellow cards were given to the Gold's Juan Cappiello and Eric Howard in the minutes before halftime, the Gold stood firm and went into halftime tied 14-14 with Old Glory.

The Gold continued their scoring run as the second half began. Holden Yungert scored a penalty goal (44'), and Julian Dominguez Widmer (49') quickly followed with a try by breaking through the Old Glory defense. Damian Stevens hit another penalty goal for the Gold in the 71st minute, bringing the Gold 18 unanswered points and a 25-14 lead over Old Glory.

The Gold's defense stood strong in the game's closing minutes despite letting up a try by Old Glory's speedy winger D'Montae Noble (80') in the game's final play. But, this would not be enough for Old Glory as the NOLA Gold held on to win the game 25-21.

The Gold did not dominate statistically with DC outperforming the Gold's 557 meters with their 742 meters. Old Glory also out-possessed the Gold 62%-38%. However, the Gold made every offensive opportunity count, and with crucial defensive stops in the second half, were able to come out on top with a vital victory.
