Goaltenders shine in week four

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO --- Playing between the pipes is never an easy task, but United Hockey League (UHL) netminders made a big impact during the fourth week of the 2004-05 season. Flint's Marco Emond paced all goaltenders with two outstanding performances and earned Southern Sports Supply UHL Goaltender of the Week honors. Emond only allowed one goal plus stopped 50 shots in his two weekend victories. Muskegon's Brent Belecki also collected two wins by only allowing two goals and making 57 saves. Rockford's Michel Robinson turned in a couple of solid performances. He compiled a 2-0-0 record, made 45 saves, and finished the week with a 1.13 goals against average (GAA). Port Huron's Daniel Berthiaume earned his first victory of the season stopping 16 of 17 shots on Saturday. Although he didn't earn the victory, Mike Fountain made strong debut for Motor City on Saturday as he stopped 34 of 36 shots.

Other performances of note include Danbury's Scott Stirling who made 86 saves in two outings. Adirondack's Derek Gustafson stopped 19 of 20 shots on Friday and Elmira's Greg Hewitt made 31 saves on Wednesday.

A couple of rookie goaltenders also made big impressions during the week. Missouri's Kevin Reiter collected his first professional win on Wednesday and finished the week with a .923 save percentage and a 1.64 GAA. Quad City's Robert Gherson also tallied his first professional victory on Saturday turning away 28 of 29 shots. He finished the week with a .965 save percentage and 1.00 GAA.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Adirondack Frostbite - (1-0-1) - The Frostbite are 3-0-2 in their last five home games.Have not lost when scoring the first goal of the game (3-0-2).Defenseman Scott Drevitch is one assist shy of moving into 10th on the team all-time assist list.Unbeaten when leading after the first or second period (4-0-0). Hit the road for eight of their next nine games.

Danbury Trashers - (1-1-0) - Captain Brent Gretzky has scored at least one point in all six road games this season. He also has scored at least one point in 10 of 11 games played this season.Goaltender Scott Stirling made his third 40+ save performance of the season on Saturday. The Trashers are 2-1-0 in those games.Mike Bayrack's shorthanded goal on Friday was the fifth on the season for Danbury, which leads the UHL.Lead the league in penalty killing (89.4%).

Elmira Jackals - (2-1-0) - Defenseman Trevor Burgess eclipsed the 100-point plateau in an Elmira uniform. His four assists on Wednesday vs. Richmond moves him into fifth place on the Jackals all-time scoring list.Burgess (1g, 8a) is tied for the UHL lead in scoring by defensemen.Left wing Jamie Thompson has scored at least one point in all seven home contests this season and is also riding a three-game assist streak.Center Greg Koehler (10g, 8a) and Right wing Jason Sessa (9g, 9a) are tied for the league lead in points.

Flint Generals - (1-1-1) - Have scored the first goal in each of the last four games leading to a record of 3-0-1 during that span.Right wing Bobby Reynolds has scored at least one point in eight of the first nine games.Right wing Rob Valicevic is on a seven-game point-scoring streak.Defenseman J.P. Morin is a plus-8 in his last five games.Right wing Mike Kinnie leads all UHL rookies with six goals.Play the next seven games at home.

Fort Wayne Komets - (0-2-0) - Hosted the largest crowd of the week (7,614) on Saturday vs. Kansas City.Four Komet streaks were halted on Friday vs. Danbury. Chris Grenville and P.C. Drouin each had seven-game point-scoring streaks stopped, Colin Chaulk had a six-game point-scoring streak end, and Sean Venedam had a five-game point streak snapped...Goaltender Kevin St. Pierre has made seven consecutive starts.

Kalamazoo Wings - (2-0-0) - Have scored three of their last ten goals with under two seconds remaining in a period.Center David Struch played in his 500th career game on Friday vs. Kansas City.Left wing Ryan Barnes is on a four-game point-scoring streak.K-Wings are allowing 24 shots per game which is the lowest in the UHL.Averaging 35.3 shots per game which is second in the league.3-1-0 when leading after two periods.

Kansas City Outlaws - (1-3-0) - Have been outshot by their opponents 381 to 270 this season.Right wing Joe Seroski tallied five goals last week and leads the UHL with 13.Seroski also leads the league in shooting percentage (.433) as he has scored his 13 goals on only 30 shots.Left wing Jason Ruff leads the UHL with 12 assists.

Missouri River Otters - (1-1-0) - Goaltender Kevin Reiter earned his first professional victory on Wednesday vs. Kansas City.The River Otters penalty kill ranks fourth in the UHL (87.5%).Have outscored their opponents 12-4 in the second period.Right wing Justin Quenneville ranks third among rookies with 10 points (3g, 7a)...Forward Mark Odut is tied for second among UHL rookies with four goals and ranks third with 27 shots on goal.

Motor City Mechanics - (0-2-0) - Goaltender Rod Branch is fourth in the league with 233 saves.Kyle Kos is tied for the league lead among defensemen with eight assists and is tied for third with eight points.The Mechanics hit the road for their next five games.Right wing Brad Cruikshank has tallied at least one penalty in each of the Mechanics last five home games.

Muskegon Fury - (2-0-0) - Remain the lone unbeaten team in the UHL (7-0-1).Have outscored their opponents 19-5 in the second period.Penalty kill unit has not allowed a goal in the last eleven power play opportunities by their opponents and have been successful on 20 of their last 21.Center Todd Robinson (5g, 10a) has notched at least one point in each of the Fury's eight games this season.Power play unit leads the UHL with a 36.2% success rate.

Port Huron Beacons - (1-1-0) - Center Nick Lees notched a goal in his professional debut on Friday vs. Elmira.Defenseman Chris Slater dished out an assist in his first game as a Beacon on Friday.Right wing Mat Goody has a penalty in five consecutive games.Center Malcolm MacMillan is tied for third in the UHL in shooting percentage (.333).The Beacons have a record of 2-1-1 in one-goal games.

Quad City Mallards - (2-1-1) - Coach Paul Gillis recorded his 200th win behind the Mallard bench in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over Rockford.In his home debut on Saturday, goaltender Robert Gherson earned his first professional victory stopping 28 Danbury shots.Right wing Greg Barber has recorded a point in five of the six games he has played with the Mallards this season.Quad City killed 9 of 10 combined opponent power plays on Saturday and Sunday.

Richmond RiverDogs - (1-2-0) - Earned their first shootout win of the season on Saturday.Goaltender Ryan McIntosh has won all three of his starts.The 'Dogs have fired 30 or more shots on goal in seven of 10 games this season. Each time they have been held under 30 came against Adirondack.Left wing Francis Belanger is riding a five-gave point-scoring streak.Richmond had a season low six PIM's on Saturday.Anthony DiPalma came out retirement to join the 'Dogs on Wednesday.

Rockford IceHogs - (2-1-0) - Center J.C. Ruid and rookie defenseman Steve Pelletier are tied for the UHL lead in plus-minus (+10).Ruid is on a four-game scoring streak with eight points (3g, 5a) during that span.In his last four games, Goaltender Michel Robinson is 3-0-1 with a .946 save percentage and a 1.98 GAA.The IceHogs are 4-0-0 in the second game of back-to-back games this season.Every skater on the team has plus-minus rating of even or above.Rockford is outscoring their opponents 28-14 in the first and third periods combined.
