Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Sand Gnats took both halves of the doubleheader against Rome on Thursday night to extend their winning streak to a season-long three games. Savannah took Game 1, 4-3, and Game 2, 5-4.
In Game 1, Savannah entered the bottom of the 4th inning trailing 3-1 but rallied for three runs thanks to a two-run, two-out single by Daniel Stegall to tie it at 3-3. Hector Pellot then drove Stegall home with a triple to right-center field to give Savannah a 4-3 lead. Ryan Meyers pitched two scoreless innings to earn his 6th save of the season. Tobi Stoner gave up three runs off six hits in 5.0 innings and won his 3rd consecutive game after starting the season 0-5.
In the nightcap the Gnats held on for a 5-4 win despite a late rally from Rome. Savannah led 5-2 heading into the 7th and final inning. Emary Frederick started the inning by walking the first two batters he faced.
David Koons came in to save the game but gave up back-to-back singles to allow the runners to score and cut the lead to 5-4. He then got Willie Cabrera to ground out to the second baseman. With two outs and runners on second and third, Tyler Flowers stepped out of the batters box after watching strike two. Citing a rule preventing batters from leaving the box after a called strike, home plate umpire Tom Walkoviak called Flowers out on strikes. Jon Mark Owings then struck out looking as Koons earned his 3rd save of the season.
Frederick pitched 2.0 innings to earn his first professional victory. Starter Julio Polanco pitched well, giving up just one run off one hit in 4.0 innings of work.
Friday is the finale of this five-game series with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday Night Fireworks will immediately following the game. For tickets and a complete schedule call 912-351-9150 or visit www.sandgnats.com.
