Tonight: The first-half-champion Gnats play game three of their four-game series in Lexington, KY after splitting the first two against the Legends, the SAL affiliate of the Houston Astros. The Gnats are 2-4 on their current eight-game road trip. Savannah starts a four-game series at home against Augusta on Thursday, July 29.
Last Night: Jimmy Fuller tossed six shutout innings and Jet Butler drove home three runs to lead the Gants to a 3-0 victory over Lexington. Fuller struck out six without issuing a walk, his second walk-less performance this year.
Now Pitching: Darin Gorski is scheduled to make his eleventh start for the Gnats tonight. Since returning to the rotation at the All-Star Break, Gorski is 1-3 with a 5.63 ERA (15 ER/24 IP) in five starts. He's given up five home runs while yielding a .298 (28 H/94 AB) opponents' batting average in his last five starts. Gorski gave up four runs, all earned on five hits and a walk in his last start in a game Savannah lost 9-2 to Greenville. Last year for the Brooklyn Cyclones, Gorski was 3-4 with a 4.91 ERA in 62.1 innings over 13 appearances, 11 of which were starts. He struck out 50 batters and walked 26. The Mets selected Gorski in the 7th round of the 2009 draft out of Kutztown (PA) University where he earned the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Pitcher of the Year Award in 2009, his junior year. In 2009, Gorski led the Kutztown Golden Bears in strikeouts (100), innings pitched (78.2) and batting average against (.208). He was 10th in Division II in strikeouts.
Vs. Lexington: The Gnats are 5-1 against Lexington, 4-0 at home and 1-1 in Lexington in 2010. The Gnats swept four games from the Legends at Historic Grayson Stadium, April 28-May 1, by a combined score of 20-7.
Roster Update: Sunday, the Mets transferred reliever Luis Rojas to short-season Brooklyn and promoted Pedro P. Martinez from Brooklyn to Savannah. Martinez, who led Brooklyn in games started in 2008, did not appear in a game at all in 2009. He'd appeared in two games for the Cyclones, giving up two runs on a home run and two walks with two strikeouts.
Puello Power: Cesar Puello is hitting .345/.441/.448 (AVG/OBP/SLG) in July. He's second in the SAL in on base percentage in the month behind only Ramon Cabrera (.459) of West Virginia. Puello has hit safely in five straight and 13 of his last 14 games during which time he's raised his batting average by 20 points from .258 on July 10 to .278 today. Puello is sixth in the SAL with 36 stolen bases, four behind Jeremy Hazelbaker of Greenville who leads the league with 40.
New Half: In the first half, while going 42-28, Gnats' pitching allowed just 3.31 runs per game while the offense scored 4.7 runs per contest. In the second half, the team's scoring is down to 4.1 runs per game, while Savannah pitching is allowing more runs, an average of 4.37 runs per game.
Armed and Dangerous: The Gnats lead the SAL with a 2.78 ERA and 860 strikeouts. At the end of the first half, the Gnats had a 2.52 ERA, so the team's ERA has risen by over a quarter of a run (0.26) in 30 games.
Playoffs: By virtue of winning the first half, the Gnats will have home-field advantage in the Southern Division Championship Series. The second half winner will host game one on Wednesday, September 8 before the series returns to Savannah for game two on Friday, September 10 and game three, if necessary, on Saturday, September 11.
