August 1, 2012 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Glens Falls Dragons News Release
The Glens Falls Golden Eagles defeated the Oneonta Outlaws on Wednesday night at East Field. The win clinches the #2 seed in the upcoming PGCBL playoffs for the Golden Eagles, while Oneonta completes their season with a record of 25-22. A come-from-behind win for Mohawk Valley clinched the fourth and final playoff spot for the DiamondDawgs.
Cory Folk (Buffalo) earns the win and improves to 3-0 on the summer, while Taylor Hicks (Georgia) takes the loss and drops to 1-5. Ryan Skoubo (Tacoma C.C.) got the save by getting the final out, which is his third of the season.
Oneonta jumped ahead early with a run in the top half of the 1st as an error by Alberto Morales (Clarendon) scored Sutton Whiting (Louisville) who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Glens Falls would put a trio of runs on the board in the home half of the same frame. A throwing error by Oneonta starting pitcher Hicks followed by a walk led to an RBI fielder's choice for Chase Griffin (Georgia Southern). Mike Vigliarolo would follow it up with an RBI double that gave the home team a lead they would never relinquish. An RBI infield single by Buddy Putnam (South Florida) provided the third and final run of the inning.
The Golden Eagles added three more runs in the bottom of the second on the strength of an RBI single by Danny Brennan (St. Louis) and a two-run single by Kevin Meyers (N.E. Oklahoma A&M).
With a pair of runners on base and two away in the top of the sixth, Outlaws second basemen Cory Hunt hit a long foul ball down the left field line that looked fair for a three-run home run but was called foul.
Whiting would come on to pitch the bottom of the sixth for the visitors and allowed a pair of runs giving the Golden Eagles an 8-1 lead at the time. After a walk, infield single and a sacrifice bunt, an RBI single by Brandon Matthews (Yavapai) plated run No. 7 on the night for Glens Falls. With Anthony Pisani (Southern Maine) at the plate, Matthews was erased on a caught stealing, but a run would score on the play as Meyers scampered home on the throw.
The Outlaws would add a lone run in the top of the eighth as a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Cody Hough (UC Riverside) plated the second run of the night for Greg Zackrison's squad.
Oneonta made things interesting in the ninth by putting three runs on the board and bringing the tying run to the plate. An error by Casey Rodrigue (LSU-Eunice) and a hit by pitch led to an RBI single by Whiting. Two batters later, an RBI single from Zac Johnson (Illinois St.) and a sacrifice fly to right by Zach Lucas (Louisville) accounted for the final margin. Hough came to the plate representing the tying run, drew a walk before Ben Mordini (Utah) was retired 1-3 on a chopper back to the mound in his first at bat of the season.
Glens Falls will remain at home to host the Newark Pilots in Game 1 of the PGCBL Playoffs on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7 P.M. The Outlaws see their season come to a close.
