Gladiators Shut out Royals, 2-0

Gwinnett (4-2-1-0) stays in second place in the South Division with nine points, while the Royals (3-3-1-0) remain in second in the Atlantic Division. The win Sunday gave the Glads five out of a possible six points on their three-game road trip.

The only goal of the first came off the stick of Gwinnett forward Nikita Kashirsky with just two minutes left in the period, as he redirected a shot from the slot past Reading goalie Joe Palmer for the 1-0 Gwinnett lead. Justin Milo and Andy Brandt picked up the assists on Kashirsky's third tally of the season.

A scoreless second saw plenty of free-flowing, well-played hockey, but nobody found the back of the net until the 16:02 mark of the third period. Fresh off a successful penalty kill Brandt slipped behind the Royals defense, and the veteran forward beat Palmer in on a clean breakaway for his second goal of the campaign to give Gwinnett some breathing room. Sabres prospect Corey Fienhage and defenseman Paul Flache had the assists on the play, as Jakaitis slammed the door shut from there to earn his second win of the season.

Joe Palmer took the loss for Reading, stopping 29 of 31 shots.

The Glads excelled in special teams, limiting Reading's third-ranked powerplay coming into the day to an 0-for-4 performance. Gwinnett however was unable to capitalize on their lone chance on the man advantage.

Gwinnett now heads home to take on the Florida Everblades Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
