
Gladiators season ends in 4-3 loss to Aces in game 5

The Alaska Aces beat the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 in Game 5 of the Finals to capture the 2006 Kelly Cup. Alaska used a second period goal by Mike Scott on a power play to get by the Gladiators and then buckled down defensively to knock off the Gladiators.
Alaska's Mike Scott was named the 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs MVP as he posted two goals and had an assist in the Finals while he finished the playoffs with 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points and 2 game winning goals for the Aces.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Gladiators posted the game's first goal and looked to set the tone. Guillaume Desbiens capitalized on a Gladiators power play at the 2:51 mark of the first period ripping a snap shot past Alaska goaltender Matt Underhill from the slot for the goal. Brad Schell and Jeff Campbell collected the assists on the marker for Gwinnett.
Alaska, though, was able to answer tying the game at one at the 12:07 mark of the first period with a shorthanded goal by Mike Scott. Peter Metcalf picked up an assists as he sprung Scott on a 2-on-1 break. Scott took the shot and beat Gladiators netminder Adam Berkhoel over his shoulder.
Jon Awe got the marker back for the Gladiators on the same power play chance that Alaska scored shorthanded. Awe's power play goal came unassisted just 50 seconds after the Aces' marker.
Derek Nesbitt pushed the Gladiators lead to 3-1 with his 6th goal of the post season jamming a loose puck in the crease past Underhill on a power play. Brad Schell and Jeff Campbell each had their second helpers of the night on the goal at the 16:57 mark of the first period.
The Aces did not go away as Oliver Filion beat Berkhoel over the shoulder with a snapshot at the 17:54 mark to draw Alaska within a goal. Mike Scott and Cam Keith collected the assists as the set up a wide open Filion parked in the right wing circle.
Cam Keith equalized the contest with just 20 seconds left in the opening stanza as Alaska bear down offensively and flipped a bouncing puck in the slot past Berkhoel for the marker. Barrett Heisten and Filion added the assists on the goal.
Alaska capitalized on a power play at the 11:43 mark of the second period to take their first lead of the game. Mike Scott scored his 11th goal of the post season as he ripped a slap shot past Berkhoel from the right wing circle just 7 seconds in to the man advantage. Kimbi Daniels also collected an assist on the go-ahead power play marker for the Aces.
