Gladiators Lose First Game to San Diego 113 - 79

November 15, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Orange County Gladiators News Release

There was excitement in the air at the inaugural game of the Orange County Gladiators against the Wild Cats in San Diego. Opening day electricity alone, however, was not enough for the new franchise to avoid a 113-79 loss. The Wild Cats coming off a 106-69 win in San Francisco Saturday night, kept their hot shooting and stingy defense going Wednesday against the Gladiators, improving their record to 2-0 and continuing a dominating start to their 2007/2008 season.

The loss for the new Gladiator franchise understandably showed a lack of chemistry, given that the roster was only finalized during the last week leading up to the opener. Missed free throws, missed 3D opportunities combined with San Diego's full court press seemed to put the Gladiators in a hole could never climb out of.

One of the few bright spots for the Gladiators came in the second period with just under six minutes to play in the half, where a 12-0 run started by point guard Kevin Houston cut the lead to 9. But the Wild Cats closed the half strong, hitting a big three at the buzzer giving them a 58-42 lead that they would never relinquish.

Phil Givens led the way for the Gladiators with 24 points and 7 foot 1 Hondre Brewer, who contributed 21 points on 9 of 13 from the field, showed some signs of brilliance with a great defensive presence and a baby hook that will be hard to stop once the offense gets going.

The Gladiators travel to Los Angeles to play the L.A. Push tonight at 7:15 P.M.
