San Jose Giants News Release

Pablo Sandoval and Bobby Felmy each belted home runs and Tim Alderson fired six effective innings on the mound to lead the San Jose Giants to a 7-4 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Sunday afternoon. In front of 3,147 fans at Municipal Stadium, the Giants posted their third straight win over Inland Empire to begin the series. With the victory, San Jose improves their record to 17-7 and remains in a first place tie in the North Division.

Felmy (3-for-4, HR, RBI) homered for the second time in the series while Sandoval (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) hit his team-leading seventh round-tripper of the season. Matt Downs (3-for-5, 2B, RBI, 2 SB) also finished with a multiple-hit game for the Giants.

Alderson (3-1) surrendered three runs (all earned) on seven hits during his stint on the mound. The right-hander walked just one batter and struck out a season-high six.

Trailing 1-0, Sandoval got the Giants on the scoreboard with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second inning to deep left field. Brett Pill followed with a walk before Felmy singled and Sarmiento walked to load the bases. Juan Ciriaco scored the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center field and then Mike McBryde plated Felmy with a fielder's choice ground out.

In the fourth, Felmy connected for a leadoff homer to straightaway right field to extend the lead to 4-1. For Felmy, it was his second home run of the season.

San Jose added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Dom Duggan led off with a double and scored two batters later on Sandoval's sharp single into center field.

Alderson allowed a single run in the top of the first inning before tossing four straight scoreless frames. At one point, the right-hander set down eight Inland Empire hitters in a row from the first through the fourth innings. In the top of the sixth, consecutive singles from Trayvon Robinson and Josh Bell started the inning before the duo successfully executed a double steal. Alderson recovered to set down the next two hitters on a line out and a strike out, but Matt Berezay delivered a bloop single into shallow left field plating both Robinson and Bell to make the score 5-3.

The Giants though responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Ciriaco doubled into the left field corner before McBryde drew a walk. Downs followed with an RBI single into right center field to score Ciriaco and move McBryde to third base. Then with Duggan at the plate, the Giants tried a double steal and the play was successful as McBryde scored San Jose's seventh run of the contest.

Steve Edlefsen tossed two scoreless innings out of the Giants bullpen over the seventh and eighth frames. Edlefsen yielded two hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Then in the ninth, Taylor Wilding allowed one run on two hits, but struck out Bell to end the game with the potential tying run in the on-deck circle.
