Vancouver Giants News Release
VANCOUVER BC - The Vancouver Giants fired forty-one shots on Chilliwack Bruins goalkeeper Lucas Gore on Wednesday night, but it took power play goals by Brent Regner and Casey Pierro-Zabotel before the Giants could claim victory, 2-1 over the Bruins on Wednesday night at the Pacific Coliseum.
In what was for the most part a one sided affair, as Vancouver would send wave after wave at the Chilliwack keeper, only to be thwarted and turned aside by the excellent play of Gore. Kevin Sundher would open the scoring in this game, as he would take a Scott McDonald pass at the Giants blue line and drive down the wing, beating Tyson Sexsmith with a shot between the legs to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at the 16:48 mark of the opening period. The Bruins lead would hold up through 20 minutes despite the Giants outshooting Chilliwack 16-6.
Period two would see the Giants continue their assault on the Chilliwack goalie. Gore would be stellar, turning aside many chances. The Giants were finally able to beat Gore on the power play. Brent Regner would smack in a puck past Gore on a goal mouth scramble at 12:28 of the second to tie things up at 1. Late in the period, the Giants would get another chance on the man advantage, and Casey Pierro-Zabotel would make the Bruins pay. Casey would take a perfect feed from Evander Kane and one time a shot past Gore to give the Giants a 2-1 lead at 19:20 of the second period. The Giants would take their 2-1 lead after two and would do so after outshooting the Bruins 21-3 in the second period.
The third period would see Tyson Sexsmith step up to preserve the win. Sexsmith and the Giants were outshot 9-4 in the third and Sexsmith had a nice sequence of saves off of Ryan Howse and Andy Smith midway through the period to keep the score 2-1 Vancouver. Sexsmith would earn his 32nd win of the season and the Giants would pick up win 47 in the process.
Lucas Gore would stop 39 of 41 shots, but the only thing he would pick up is the first star honours at the Rink on Renfrew. Chilliwack drops their 7th straight game and sees their shot at the post season dwindle with yet another loss to Vancouver. Lifetime, Vancouver is 30-2-1-1 in regular season and post season play over their Fraser Valley rivals.
The Giants are now 47-5-0-3 on the season and 24-1-0-2 at home. The Giants hit the road on Friday night to take on the red hot Kelowna Rockets. You can catch all the WHITE SPOT GIANTS HOCKEY action on AM 650. The pre-game show will begin at 6:30 pm and the puck will drop at 7 pm from Prospera Place, as Dave Sheldon will have the call of all the action.
