"The Giants Sports Foundation is thrilled to work with Mann Packing Company to bring the San Jose Giants summer camps back to a neighboring city," said, Giants Sports Foundation Executive Director Cassandra Hofman. "This camp has brought together many community partners in Salinas including the YMCA, Mann Packing and Rancho Cielo Youth Campus. We are fortunate to be able to share our camps with other deserving areas."
"We want to offer this instructional camp to kids in our community that would otherwise not have access to programs like this," said Lorri Koster, Vice President of Marketing for Mann Packing Company. "It also compliments the community outreach programs designed to get kids off the streets and into healthy activities. Baseball is very popular and the camp not only teaches basic skills in the sport but character and leadership traits as well."
RBI is a youth outreach program designed to increase participation and interest in baseball and softball, to encourage academic participation and achievement and teach the value of teamwork. It also strives to increase the number of athletes prepared to play in college and the minor leagues, and promotes greater inclusion of minorities into the mainstream of the game. The RBI concept was developed in 1989 and Major League Baseball assumed administration in 1991. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a MLB Charity, assists with the formation of RBI leagues and programs in some cities. To date, RBI programs have been started in more than 200 cities worldwide and annually have provided as many as 120,000 boys and girls the opportunity to play baseball and softball.
