MODESTO - The San Jose Giants split a doubleheader with the Modesto Nuts on Wednesday evening at John Thurman Field suffering an 8-4 defeat in the opener before earning a 7-2 victory in the nightcap. The win snapped San Jose's season-high losing streak at six games and improved their overall record to 51-25.

In the second game, the Giants scored five runs in the top of the first inning before cruising to the victory. Luke Anders (3-for-4) singled three times while Jarrett Parker (2-for-4, HR, RBI) hit his seventh home run of the season to lead the offensive attack.

Michael Main (1-0) picked-up his first win of the season in the nightcap. The San Jose starter tossed five innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

The second game started with Gary Brown drawing a walk before Jose Flores bounced into a fielder's choice for the first out. Alex Burg then singled and after Parker flied out, Ryan Cavan stepped to the plate and doubled to deep right center scoring both runners. Tommy Joseph was up next and he doubled down the left field line to plate Cavan for a 3-0 lead before Anders' RBI single made it 4-0. James Simmons followed with an RBI double into right center field - the fourth consecutive run-scoring hit - extending the lead to 5-0.

Main worked a scoreless bottom of the first before pitching around a two-out walk and a hit by pitch in the second. Main struck out the side in the second inning. He then used double plays in both the third and fourth innings to keep the Nuts off the scoreboard.

The Giants extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth as Flores led off by drawing a walk before Burg hammered an RBI double to the fence in deep left field.

Modesto broke through against Main in the bottom of the fifth as consecutive doubles from Carlos Martinez and Beau Seabury to start the inning produced one run before Angelys Nina delivered a two-out, RBI single to bring the Nuts to within 6-2.

Parker's two-out solo homer down the right field line in the top of the sixth gave the Giants a 7-2 advantage.

Jake Dunning (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO) struck out two batters each in scoreless sixth and seventh innings to seal the San Jose victory.

Burg (2-for-4, 2B, RBI), Cavan (2-for-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Simmons (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) also finished with two hits apiece. San Jose out-hit Modesto by a 14-5 margin.

Nuts starter Alan DeRatt suffered the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits over 2/3 of an inning. DeRatt, who was making his first start of the season after 16 relief appearances, threw 45 pitches during his stint on the mound.

The first game of the doubleheader saw Modesto jump out to an 8-0 lead before holding off the Giants for the win. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Kent Matthes belted a two-out, two-run homer to left off of San Jose starter Chris Heston.

The Nuts then took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth sending 12 batters to the plate scoring six runs on six hits. Josh Rutledge led off the inning with a single before an attempted sacrifice bunt from Jose Gonzalez. However on the play, Heston threw wildly to second for an error as he tried to retire the lead runner as Rutledge raced into third. David Christensen then reached base on a bunt single down the first base line as Rutledge scored to make it 3-0. After a sacrifice bunt from Delta Cleary, Jr. - the third consecutive bunt from a Modesto hitter - Nina came through with an RBI single. Nolan Arenado was up next and he smacked a two-run double to deep left center extending the lead to 6-0. After Heston walked the next batter, Jose Valdez was summoned from the bullpen, but he promptly allowed a double to right center off the bat of Matthes as two more runs scored to make it 8-0.

The Giants cut the Nuts lead in half with one run in the sixth and three runs in the top of the seventh, but still fell short. In the sixth, two walks to Burg and Parker started the inning before Nick Liles reached on a two-out error to score a run. Then in the seventh, Bobby Haney drew a leadoff walk before Burg walked with two outs. Parker followed with a line drive double down the left field line as Haney scored the first run of the frame. Joseph then singled sharply up the middle plating two more runs as San Jose closed to within 8-4, but Modesto reliever Kurt Yacko set down Flores on a pop out to third ending the game.

Parker Frazier (5-7), who came within one out of a complete game, earned the win for the Nuts. Frazier tossed 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits with six walks and five strikeouts.

Modesto out-hit the Giants 10-5. No San Jose player recorded a multi-hit game.

Heston (6-4) suffered the loss after yielding eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two. Heston faced just one batter over the minimum during three scoreless innings to begin his start before allowing eight runs over the next two frames.
