(LANCASTER, CA) - Shaver Hansen went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Gabriel Noriega hit a grand slam in High Desert's 14-9 victory over Lancaster at Clear Channel Stadium Wednesday. The JetHawks gave up a franchise-record 13 runs in the second inning.
Lancaster struck first with three runs off Mavericks starter Brandon Maurer in the opening frame. Austin Wates singled with two outs to extend his hit streak to a career-high 13 games. After Kody Hinze drew a walk, Jonathan Meyer smacked a three-run home run over the right field wall to put the JetHawks in front 3-0.
High Desert answered with 13 runs off JetHawks starter Jose Cisnero (3-7) and reliever Colt Pitkin in the second. With two runners on, Trevor Coleman ripped a two-run double. Coleman scored later in the frame on a wild pitch from Cisnero. Hansen hit a two-run triple and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. The Mavericks collected seven hits in the inning, scored two runs off wild pitches and one run on a passed ball. Cisnero allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on two hits with three walks and a strikeout in an inning and 2/3 of work. Pitkin surrendered seven runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning.
JC Thompson's three-run homer in the bottom of the third made it a 13-6 ballgame.
After High Desert added a run in the top of the sixth, Lancaster scored twice in the bottom of the frame. Jay Austin drove in a run with an RBI groundout and Jio Mier hit an RBI single that plated Jordan Comadena. Hinze hit his California League-leading 21st home run in the bottom of the ninth, but the JetHawks could not add any more runs in the inning.
Willy Kesler (3-2) earned the win in relief for High Desert. The loss dropped Lancaster to 2-5 in the second half and 30-46 overall. High Desert improved to 4-3 in the second half and 36-41 overall.
The JetHawks will try to bounce back when the two teams meet Thursday night at 7. Right-hander Zach Grimmett (4-3, 4.95 ERA) gets the start for Lancaster while the Mavericks are expected to counter with right-hander Forrest Snow (0-2, 14.09 ERA).
