Giants Score In Every Inning To Rout Bakersfield, 12-2

The San Jose Giants became the second team in the history of the California League to score during every inning as part of a 12-2 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze on Monday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark in the opener of a four-game series. Bobby Felmy led the 13-hit Giants offensive attack by finishing a triple shy of the cycle while Chris Begg earned the win on the mound after tossing six effective innings. San Jose has now won six out of their last seven games to improve their overall record to 51-30.

The Giants joined the 2001 Lancaster JetHawks as the only teams to score runs in every inning of a nine-inning game. On April 20, 2001, Lancaster routed Visalia by a 17-5 score plating runs in all eight of their innings (the JetHawks were the home team).

Felmy (3-for-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) and Brad Boyer (3-for-3) each finished with three hits during Monday's contest. Tyler Graham (2-for-5, 2 RBI, SB) and Brock Bond (2-for-5, SB) also recorded multiple-hit games at the plate.

Begg (1-0), who joined the Giants before the game from Fresno (AAA) as he recovers from a shoulder injury, surrendered one run on six hits during his stint on the mound. The right-hander walked none and struck out two.

San Jose quickly jumped in front with a single tally in the top of the first against Blaze starter Omar Poveda. Graham started the game with a single before advancing all the way to third base on Bond's ground out. Felmy then stepped to the plate and belted an RBI double off the fence in deep right field.

In the second, Dayton Buller led off with a double and advanced to third base on Boyer's single. Sharlon Schoop followed with a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Buller for a 2-0 lead.

Felmy was responsible for the third-inning scoring as he hammered the first pitch of his at-bat over the wall in right field for a solo homer. The home run was Felmy's fifth of the season.

The Giants knocked Poveda out of the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. With one out, Boyer singled before scoring when the next batter, Schoop, lined a double off the fence in left center field. After Mike McBryde popped out, Graham singled sharply up the middle to score Schoop. That prompted a pitching change as reliever Josh Giles entered the contest and hit Bond with a pitch to put runners on first and second. Then with Felmy at the plate, Graham and Bond executed a double steal while Graham scored on the play when the pitch from Giles bounced away from the catcher and rolled toward the San Jose on-deck circle. When the dust had settled, the Giants had moved in front by a 6-0 margin.

Poveda (0-2) was saddled with the loss after yielding six runs (all earned) on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings.

San Jose took advantage of poor Bakersfield defense to score a pair of unearned runs against Giles in the fifth and sixth innings. The Blaze committed three errors in the top of the fifth leading to a run while in the sixth, Bond singled with two outs, advanced to second on an error and scored on Felmy's single.

The Giants kept the pressure on into the seventh frame as consecutive walks to Buller and Boyer started the rally. After an error allowed Schoop to reach base safely, McBryde delivered a sacrifice fly to center field plating Buller with San Jose's ninth run of the contest.

In the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter Dom Duggan came through with a two-out infield single to third base scoring a run. That was followed by a bases loaded walk to Graham to score another run. Then in the ninth, Felmy led off by drawing a walk before advancing to second on an error and to third base on another walk. Felmy would eventually score on a one-out wild pitch to put the Giants in the record books.

San Jose out-hit Bakersfield by a 13-9 margin and also took advantage of seven Blaze errors.

Begg allowed his only run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Chad Tracy led off with a double and scored three batters later on Manny Pina's fielder's choice ground out. Begg threw only 68 pitches during his six-inning stint.

Taylor Wilding (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) and Craig Whitaker (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) both worked out of the Giants bullpen to seal the victory.
