Giants Score 12 In Seventh To Rout High Desert

The San Jose Giants scored 12 runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to a convincing 18-5 victory over the High Desert Mavericks in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night at Stater Bros. Stadium. San Jose achieved new season-highs in runs scored and hits (22) to claim their fifth consecutive win. Travis Ishikawa belted a two-run homer to break a 5-5 and start the seventh-inning onslaught while Adam Witter led the offensive attack with a 5-for-6 effort at the plate that included four doubles. With the victory, the Giants improve their Second Half record to 23-16 and continue to sit three games behind the Modesto Nuts (26-13) for the top spot in the division.

Every San Jose starter recorded at least one hit as the Giants won for the ninth time in their last ten games. Antoan Richardson (3-for-5, 2 3B, 3 RBI), Pablo Sandoval (3-for-6, 2 RBI), and Anthony Contreras (3-for-5, 4 RBI) each pounded out three hits. Meanwhile, Ishikawa (2-for-5, HR, 4 RBI), Brad Boyer (2-for-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI), and David Maroul (2-for-6, RBI) all contributed two hits apiece.

The Giants led 5-1 until High Desert scored a single run in the fifth and three in the bottom of the sixth to draw even. In the sixth, facing San Jose starting pitcher Ronnie Ray, Kevin Reynolds led off with a bunt single and he immediately scored when the following hitter, Carlos Triunfel doubled. After Jesus Guzman doubled to score Triunfel bringing High Desert to within 5-4, Ray was removed from the contest.

Reliever Ben Cox promptly allowed a single to the first batter he faced, Adam Moore, plating Guzman with the tying run. Then a walk to Travis Scott put runners on first and second with still none out. But Jeff Frazier lined into a double play to shortstop followed by a strikeout of Jeff Flaig to end the inning and keep the score tied.

The Giants responded by sending 16 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh against three Mavericks pitchers.

Ben Copeland started the inning with a single into center field bringing Ishikawa to the plate. On a 3-2 pitch delivered by High Desert reliever Roman Martinez, Ishikawa connected for a home run to deep right field. The blast, Ishikawa's sixth of the season with San Jose, gave the Giants a 7-5 lead.

Witter restarted the rally by lining a double into the right field corner before Sandoval singled to right to put runners on the corners. After Boyer walked to load the bases, High Desert brought in left-hander Paul Fagan to face the left-handed hitting Contreras.

Contreras worked the count to 2-2 before a lining a single into left field scoring both Witter and Sandoval for a 9-5 lead. After Maroul struck out, Richardson hammered a ball to deep left center field that reached the fence for a two-run triple. Both Boyer and Contreras come home to score pushing the San Jose advantage to 11-5.

Two batters later, Copeland drew a walk and then stole second base. Ishikawa followed with a sharp single into right center field to score Richardson and Copeland for a 13-5 lead. The rally continued when Witter doubled before Sandoval singled home two more.

Aaron Cotter then relieved Fagan but promptly allowed an RBI double to Boyer scoring Sandoval. Then Contreras singled home Boyer to cap the 12-run inning and give the Giants a commanding 17-5 lead.

Cox (1-1) was credited with his first victory of the season with two scoreless innings of relief (2 H, 1 BB, 2 SO). Ray received no-decision after surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits in five-plus innings. The starter struck out four and did not walk a single batter.

Richardson scored San Jose's first run of the evening with a two-out, RBI triple in the top of the second inning. He then scored when the following hitter, Brian Bocock, reached on an error.

A Boyer RBI fielder's choice and a Maroul RBI single accounted for the Giants' two runs in the fourth to make it a 4-1 contest. Then in the fifth, Ishikawa scored when Witter doubled into right field and the ball was misplayed by Eddy Hernandez in the corner.

Notes: San Jose's previous season-highs were 14 runs and 18 hits ... Copeland, Ishikawa, Witter, and Sandoval all scored two runs in the seventh inning ... Witter became the second Giants player to record five hits in a game (Sandoval - twice, May 4 at Bakersfield, June 22 at Bakersfield) ... High Desert, losers of 19 of their last 23 games, have the worst team ERA in the California League at 6.60 ... Richardson now leads the Giants with seven triples (tied for fifth in the league) ... Ishikawa's four RBI all came in the seventh inning ... Darren Sack (1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Ryan Paul (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) combined to hold the Mavericks scoreless over the final two innings ... San Jose improved their overall record to a season-high 15 games over .500 at 62-47 ... The Giants finish July with a 17-12 mark - second-best month of the season (April - 17-8) ... San Jose has yet to record a losing month this year ... Taylor Wilding (4-0, 1.52 ERA, 11 SV), San Jose's lone all-star representative this season, has rejoined the club from Connecticut (AA) ... Wayne Foltin (1-1, 7.14 ERA, 5 SV) was assigned to Augusta (Low-A).

On Deck: The Giants and Mavericks continue this three-game series on Wednesday evening with first pitch at Stater Bros. Stadium scheduled for 7:05 P.M. Gregorio Martinez (5-8, 4.94 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while High Desert is expected to counter with Cibney Bello (4-7, 7.01 ERA).
