June 26, 2022 - California League (CalL)
San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants winning streak reached 10 games with a 9-3 victory over the Stockton Ports on Saturday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. One night after pounding out 20 hits in a blowout win, the Giants achieved a season-high with 21 hits on their way to another convincing victory against the host Ports. San Jose (42-26, 2-0 second half) has now claimed the first five games in the series and have won 10 in a row overall for the first time since the 2013 season.
Grant McCray (4-for-6, 3 2B, HR, RBI) homered for the fourth time in the series and also hit three doubles to lead the Giants offensively on Saturday. Carter Williams (3-for-5, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI), Riley Mahan (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Alexander Suarez (3-for-5, HR, RBI) also each homered as part of three-hit nights at the plate.
San Jose starter Landen Roupp was spectacular on the mound tossing six scoreless innings with only two hits allowed. Roupp, who retired 18 of the 22 batters he faced, walked one and struck out seven during his masterful pitching performance.
The Giants took an immediate lead in the contest when McCray began the top of the first inning with an opposite field home run to left. It was his 10th homer of the season and second leadoff blast this year.
San Jose then hit two more home runs during their third-inning rally to extend the lead. Suarez led off with a line drive home run to left - his eighth round-tripper of the year and third in the series. McCray followed with a double down the right field line before Williams' one-out RBI double made it 3-0. Then with two down, Mahan stepped to the plate and launched a 437 foot two-run home run to deep center field for a 5-0 cushion. It was Mahan's third homer of the series and sixth with the Giants this season.
San Jose kept the pressure on with two more runs in the top of the fourth. McCray's third extra-base hit of the game was another double into the right field corner. Two batters later, Williams collected his second RBI double of the game as McCray scored to stretch the lead to 6-0. Victor Bericoto then knocked in Williams with a single for a 7-0 advantage.
Meanwhile, Roupp cruised throughout his entire start. The only hits allowed by the right-hander were a leadoff single to Junior Perez in the bottom of the first and a two-out single from Marcos Brito in the third. Roupp finished his start by retiring the final eight Stockton batters that he faced. He struck out two in a perfect bottom of the sixth to complete the outing.
Jorge Guzman pitched the bottom of the seventh out of the Giants bullpen and surrendered two runs as the Ports closed the gap to 7-2. Consecutive singles from Alexander Campos and T.J. Schofield-Sam started the inning before a one-out walk to Cooper Uhl loaded the bases. A passed ball then allowed Campos to score the first Stockton run. Then after a walk to Mariano Riccardi loaded the bases again, Guzman uncorked a wild pitch to bring home Schofield-Sam. Guzman though was able to prevent further damage as with runners at second and third, he struck out Perez and retired Brito on a groundout to end the inning.
San Jose then got the two runs right back in the top of the eighth on their fourth homer of the night. After Aeverson Arteaga led off with a single, Williams stepped to the plate and smacked a two-run home run to right for a 9-2 lead.
Julio Rodriguez closed out the game for the Giants working the eighth and ninth innings with one run allowed and a pair of strikeouts. The Ports scored once in the bottom of the eighth on Campos' RBI single to bring the game to its final margin of 9-3. Rodriguez then worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth to seal the San Jose victory.
Grant McCray had a leadoff home run and three doubles in San Jose's 9-3 victory on Saturday night
