April 1, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Vancouver Giants forward Davis Koch has been named the WHL McSweeney's Player of the Month for March 2019.
Koch led the WHL in scoring during the month of March, registering 24 points (5G-19A) and a plus-12 rating in 14 games as the Giants claimed first place in the B.C. Division and the Western Conference while also advancing to the second round of the 2019 WHL Playoffs. Overall, Koch recorded points in 12 of the 14 games he appeared in during the calendar month.
As part of Koch's month, he recorded nine multi-point games, including a trio of three-point performances. Continuing in the month of March, Koch established a point streak of 11 games, which concluded on March 6 and is tied for the longest streak on the Giants this season.
Ten of Koch's 24 points came in the first round of the 2019 WHL Playoffs as his Giants defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds in six games, placing Koch in the scoring lead among all WHL skaters. His nine assists also rank as the best in the league. In Saturday's series-clinching victory for the Giants, Koch recorded three assists.
The 20-year-old product of White Rock, B.C. enjoyed a career year with the Giants, recording 78 points (28G-50A) in 67 games, including five power-play goals and seven game-winning goals. The 6-foot-0, 171-pound forward wrapped up the regular season portion of his WHL career with 255 points (91G-164A) in 320 WHL games between the Giants and Edmonton Oil Kings.
In Koch's WHL Playoffs career, he's recorded 18 points (4G-14) in 24 games. Koch was originally selected in the second round, 42nd overall, by the Oil Kings in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. This month's award marks the second time a Giant has won the award after defenceman Bowen Byram earned the honours for January 2019.
The Giants are currently awaiting results from the first-round series between the Victoria Royals and Kamloops Blazers to learn their opponent for the second round of the 2019 WHL Playoffs.
