San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants scored 10 runs over the seventh and eighth innings to break open a close game and rout the Modesto Nuts 13-1 on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field. In the rubber game of the series, Thomas Neal and Angel Villalona both produced three hits and three RBI's to lead the Giants offense as San Jose posted their biggest margin of victory this season. With the win, the Giants conclude June with a spectacular 20-6 record - their first 20-win month since May of 2005 (22-9).
Neal (3-for-5, 2 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) knocked out three extra-base hits in the contest while Villalona (3-for-5, 3 RBI) and Darren Ford (3-for-4) also contributed three hits apiece. Brian Bocock (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and Tyler Graham (2-for-5, 2 RBI, SB) added two hits each.
San Jose began the top of the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead and sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame, scoring seven runs on seven hits. Aaron Lowenstein began the long rally by reaching first base on a wild pitch when he struck out swinging. Two batters later, Ford singled with one out to put runners on first and second before Graham lined a single into center plating Lowenstein with the first run of the inning.
Graham then took second base on a wild pitch before Bocock singled up the middle to score two more runs. Neal followed with an RBI double to the fence in deep left center to make it 7-1 and then with two outs, Villalona came through with an RBI single to continue the rally. Conor Gillaspie was up next and he doubled into the right field corner to score Villalona all the way from first base before Lowenstein capped the seventh-inning scoring with a bloop RBI single into shallow right center extending the Giants lead to 10-1.
San Jose added three more tallies in the top of the eighth inning with Neal grounding an RBI double down the left field line to score one run. Then with two outs, Villalona lined a two-run single into right center field pushing the Giants advantage to 13-1. San Jose scored 10 runs on 10 hits over the seventh and eighth innings.
David Mixon (2-1) was credited with the victory after tossing one scoreless inning of relief. Mixon, Wilmin Rodriguez (1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO), Daniel Turpen (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) and Dan Runzler (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 SO) all kept Modesto off the scoreboard while working out of the bullpen.
San Francisco Giant Joe Martinez made the start on the mound for San Jose as he continued his rehabilitation assignment. Martinez, who was on a strict pitch count, tossed the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed just one run on two hits. The right-hander, who began his outing by retiring nine consecutive hitters, walked one and struck out two.
The Giants initially took a 3-0 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the third inning against Nuts starter Ethan Hollingsworth. Consecutive singles from Nick Noonan and Ford began the inning before Graham delivered a sacrifice fly to right to bring home the first run of the evening. Bocock followed with an RBI double into the left field corner and then Neal lined an RBI triple down the right field line to score the third run of the frame.
Martinez didn't allow a baserunner until Charlie Blackmon led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, but the next three Modesto hitters were quickly retired in order to end the inning. In the fifth, Lars Davis doubled with one out and Maikol Gonzalez followed by drawing a walk to prompt a pitching change. Mixon was summoned from the bullpen and after inducing Michael Mitchell to ground into a fielder's choice, surrendered an RBI single to Warren Schaeffer as Gonzalez scored to bring the Nuts to within 3-1. However on the play, Mitchell was thrown out at third base attempting to advance on the throw home.
Hollingsworth (0-1), who was making his California League debut after a promotion from Asheville (Low-A), took the loss for the Nuts. He allowed six runs (all earned) on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings.
