San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE - San Jose pitchers worked out of bases loaded jams in the first and ninth innings as the Giants escaped with a 2-1 series-opening victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose hurlers scattered 11 hits in the contest as Lancaster stranded 12 runners on base. The win was the Giants' third in a row.

Nick Vander Tuig improved to 2-0 through his first two starts after limiting the JetHawks to a single run over five innings. Vander Tuig allowed six hits, walked two and struck out three during his stint on the mound. Tyler Rogers (3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) then kept Lancaster off the board over the next three innings before Bryce Bandilla (1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) worked a scoreless top of the ninth for his eighth save.

Ydwin Villegas (2-for-3, RBI) was the only San Jose player to finish with more than one hit while Chuckie Jones (1-for-3, HR, RBI, SB) clubbed his 12th home run of the season.

The JetHawks immediately threatened in the top of the first loading the bases with none out against Vander Tuig. A single from Brett Phillips started the game before Vander Tuig issued consecutive walks to Chan Moon and Rio Ruiz. The Giants starter though was able to pitch out of trouble as he registered back-to-back swinging strikeouts of Jobduan Morales and Jon Kemmer before Tyler White flied out to center.

Jones then gave San Jose a 1-0 lead with a towering solo home run in the bottom of the first.

After Vander Tuig pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the top of the third, Lancaster again threatened in the fourth. With two outs, Danry Vasquez lined a single into left and took second on the play when Tyler Horan bobbled the ball for an error. A wild pitch advanced Vasquez to third, but Vander Tuig came back to retire Jack Mayfield on a pop out to end the inning.

The Giants then added to their lead with a run in bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Scott Price blasted a double to the fence in left before Villegas grounded an RBI single down the right field line to make it 2-0.

Lancaster immediately got the run back in the top of the fifth as Phillips led off with a solo home run to right. Vander Tuig then allowed a single to Moon, but bounced back to retire the next three hitters on three groundouts to keep San Jose ahead.

With the score 2-1, Rogers relieved Vander Tuig to begin the top of the sixth and worked around a two-out single. In the seventh, Phillips singled to leadoff, but was promptly thrown out at second attempting to steal. Then in the top of the eighth after two quick outs, White singled, but was stranded when the next batter, Ronnie Mitchell, flied out to center.

Bandilla then entered from the bullpen to begin the top of the ninth and surrendered a leadoff single to Vasquez. After Mayfield flied out, Phillips blooped a single down the right field line for his fourth hit as Vasquez, the potential tying run, advanced to third. A walk to Moon followed to load the bases. Ruiz then hit a high bouncer to first that saw Price field the ball and fire home to record the force out on Vasquez for the second out of the inning. Morales was up next he worked a 3-2 count before striking out swinging on a high fastball to end the game. Lancaster finished the night 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

JetHawks starter Matt Heidenreich (3-4) suffered the loss after yielding two runs (both earned) on five hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out four. Heidenreich and reliever Gonzalo Sanudo combined to allow just one hit over the final four innings.
