Lancaster JetHawks News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Brett Phillips tallied four hits including his first Cal League home run but the JetHawks failed to hit with runners on base and fell to the San Jose Giants, 2-1, on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium.
Phillips singled to lead off the game and Chan Moon and Rio Ruiz each followed with walks to load the bases with nobody out but Lancaster (70-47) failed to score against starter Nick Vander Tuig (2-0).
The JetHawks would end up stranding 12 runners on base in the game and finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
The lack of situational hitting did not affect Phillips. The leadoff man put the JetHawks on the board with a solo home run against Vander Tuig leading off the fifth inning. He added two other hits to finish the night 4-for-5. Phillips is now 10-for-19 since being promoted to Lancaster on Monday.
Chuckie Jones hit a solo home run against Matt Heidenreich (3-4) in the bottom of the first to put San Jose (61-56) on the board first.
The Giants added another run with a pair of two-out hits in the fourth. Scott Price doubled against Heidenreich and Ydwin Villegas snuck a ground ball inside the first base line for a single to drive in the Giants second and final run of the game.
Heidenreich allowed two runs on five hits over five innings of work.
The JetHawks loaded the bases against closer Bryce Bandilla in the top of the ninth but Ruiz grounded into a fielder's choice and Jobduan Morales struck out to end the game. Bandilla picked up his eighth save.
The clubs continue the series on Friday night in San Jose. Zach Morton will start for Lancaster against Matt Lujan. First pitch is 7 p.m.
