Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Opening the second-half schedule in front of a Thursday night crowd at LoanMart Field, the Quakes twice surrendered the lead to the San Jose Giants, who rallied in the late innings to defeat Rancho, 6-5.
Rancho's offensive effort was highlighted by a three-run comeback in the middle innings of the series opener.
Trailing 4-1 heading into the fifth, Rylan Bannon helped inch the Quakes back within a run with a two-RBI single that scored Steve Berman and Zach McKinstry. Bannon finished the game two-for-five with three runs driven in.
Cody Thomas tied the game in the sixth with a solo home run and Jared Walker followed with a blast in his 2018 Quakes debut to put Rancho back on top, 5-4.
Ryan Moseley, who settled out of the Quakes bullpen in the seventh by striking out the side, allowed the game to slip away in the eighth. Gio Brusa walked to begin the inning and advanced to third on an errant throw to center field following a Sandro Fabian bunt. Brusa promptly scored the tying run on a wild pitch and Brandon Van Horn doubled home Fabian to put San Jose up 6-5.
The Quakes left runners stranded on first and second in the bottom of the ninth, as Frank Rubio secured his first save and Moseley (2-2) was saddled with the loss.
Starting pitcher Isaac Anderson began a strong outing with four shutout frames for the Quakes, but was tacked for four earned runs before recording an out in the fifth. Anderson was handed a no-decision while Michael Boyle covered for two innings of scoreless relief.
On the bump for San Jose, right-hander Nolan Riggs (2-3) pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings of relief and was positioned as the winning pitcher after San Jose's comeback eighth inning.
The Quakes continue the four-game series against the Giants on Friday night with RHP Dustin May (2-3) scheduled to make his tenth start of the season. May will be opposed by south-paw Mac Marshall (0-0) of San Jose.
