San Jose Giants News Release

Jared Dupere and Carter Williams homered while four Giants pitchers combined on a three-hitter in an 8-2 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Sunday night at John Thurman Field. San Jose hurlers Eric Silva, Ben Madison, Ofelky Peralta and Jose Cruz amassed 16 strikeouts in a dominant effort on the mound as the Giants (52-38, 12-12 second half) claimed the rubber match of the three-game series against the Nuts.

Williams' (1-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) solo homer jumpstarted a three-run rally in the top of the fourth inning that put San Jose ahead for good while Dupere's (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) three-run blast in the seventh broke the game open for the Giants. Grant McCray (3-for-5, RBI, 2 SB) added three singles and a pair of stolen bases in the win.

Silva started on the mound for San Jose and began his outing with a perfect bottom of the first. Modesto's only two runs of the contest then came in the bottom of the second as the Nuts jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Robert Perez Jr. drew a leadoff walk and Freuddy Batista singled with one out to put runners on the corners. After Walking Cabrera struck out and Batista stole second, Randy Bednar hit a low line drive into shallow center. McCray sprinted in from his center field position, but came up short on his diving attempt as the ball rolled under his glove and towards the warning track. Both runners easily scored while Bednar made it into third with a triple. Modesto though wouldn't score again and didn't manage another hit in the game until the bottom of the ninth.

Williams then got the Giants on the scoreboard when he laced the first pitch of the top of the fourth inning down the line in deep right for a solo home run. The round-tripper was Williams' seventh of the season. Back-to-back errors from the Nuts on balls hit by Victor Bericoto and Garrett Frechette then put runners on first and second with one out. The runners then advanced on Yorlis Rodriguez's fly out to deep left center before McCray's infield single plated Bericoto to tie the game. Then with Hayden Cantrelle at the plate and locked in an 11-pitch battle with Modesto's Joseph Hernandez, a balk was called on the Nuts starting pitcher allowing Frechette to score giving San Jose a 3-2 lead.

Meanwhile, Silva cruised through the remainder of his start facing the minimum number of hitters over the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Jonatan Clase worked a one-out walk, but was promptly erased on Batista's inning-ending double play. Then in the fifth, a dropped third strike allowed Bednar to reach, but Arias followed by bouncing into a double play to end the inning.

With the score still at 3-2, Madison relieved Silva to begin the bottom of the sixth and struck out the side in a dominant 1-2-3 inning. The Giants then erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh to take control of the game. Rodriguez led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. After McCray reached on an infield single and Rodriguez advanced to third, Cantrelle hit a grounder to first. On the play, Rodriguez broke for the plate and would score ahead of the throw from the first baseman Perez Jr. to make it a 4-2 game. Aeverson Arteaga was up next and he was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Adrian Sugastey popped out for the first out. Williams then hit a grounder to deep short that saw Arteaga forced at second, however McCray scored the second run of the inning. Dupere was up next with still two runners on base and he crushed a 436-foot home run to deep center. The three-run shot pushed the San Jose lead to 8-2.

The Giants would then cruise to the win as Madison fanned two more in a perfect bottom of the seventh. Peralta came on in the eighth and struck out two as he set down the side in order. Then in the ninth, Jose Cruz allowed a one-out single and issued a walk - Modesto's first baserunners since the fifth - but stranded both to seal the victory.
