San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Adam Duvall hit his 30th home run of the year as the San Jose Giants concluded the regular season with a 5-3 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Monday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Carter Jurica also homered as the Giants took three out of four games in the series and finished the year with a North Division-best 75-65 record.
Duvall's (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) three-run blast gave him 100 RBI's for the season. The California League All-Star, who already set the San Jose Giants single-season record for home runs, became the fifth player in club history to reach the 100 RBI mark.
Jurica (2-for-2, HR, RBI) and Alex Burg (2-for-4, 2B) added two hits apiece for the Giants.
Justin Schumer (7-4) earned the win after limiting the Nuts to a pair of runs (both earned) on six hits over the first six innings. Schumer walked one and struck out five. Shawn Sanford recorded the last three outs of the contest to pick-up his second save of the year.
San Jose jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as consecutive one-out singles from Joe Panik and Jurica put runners on first and second. Duvall then stepped to the plate and hammered a 2-1 pitch over the fence in straightaway center field for a three-run homer.
Modesto immediately cut the lead to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the second against Schumer. After the first two batters of the frame were retired, Brett Tanos singled. Joey Wong then singled to right moving Tanos to third. Wong advanced to second on the throw while both runners scored when the next batter, Helder Velazquez, singled up the middle.
The Giants though reclaimed their three-run advantage by scoring twice in the bottom of the third. With one out, Jurica lined a solo homer to left for a 4-2 advantage. Duvall followed with a double off the fence in right center before Ricky Oropesa's RBI single made it 5-2.
Schumer retired six straight Modesto batters after Velazquez's run- scoring hit in the top of the second. The San Jose starter pitched around a two-out double from Tanos in the top of the fourth and also worked through a single and a walk in the fifth. Schumer finished his outing with a 1-2-3 top of the sixth inning.
Phil McCormick (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) issued a one-out walk and then allowed a single in the top of the seventh, but managed to keep the Nuts off the scoreboard to maintain the 5-2 Giants lead.
In the top of the eighth, Taylor Rogers (2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Drew Bowlin (1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) combined on a scoreless inning. Edward Concepcion (0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) relieved Bowlin to start the ninth and promptly allowed back-to-back doubles to Wong and Velazquez as Modesto trimmed the lead to 5-3. Sanford (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) was then summoned from the bullpen and he promptly struck out Rafael Ortega for the first out. A walk to Delta Cleary, Jr. put the potential tying run on base, but Juan Crousset followed by grounding into a double play to shortstop ending the game.
Nuts starter Roberto Padilla (3-1) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (all earned) on seven hits over three innings. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. Three Modesto relievers then combined on five scoreless innings with just one hit allowed.
