San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Four San Jose relievers combined on four hitless innings to finish the game as the Giants earned a 3-2 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. Jarrad Page's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth put San Jose in front before the bullpen took over and preserved the lead. The Giants have now won nine out of their last 12 games.
Kelvin Marte (1-0) picked-up his first win of the season after tossing five innings with two runs (both earned) and five hits allowed. Marte struck out four and didn't walk a batter during his stint on the mound. Edward Concepcion (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO), Shawn Sanford (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO), Jose Valdez (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Cody Hall (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) then each fired a hitless inning of relief. Hall was credited with his first save since joining San Jose.
Carter Jurica (3-for-5, RBI) had three singles while Adam Duvall (2- for-3) extended his hitting streak to 16 games to lead the Giants offensively.
Lancaster jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs against Marte in the top of the first inning. Delino DeShields, Jr. started the game with a single before stealing second and then taking third when catcher Andrew Susac's throw bounced into center field for an error. Andrew Aplin then lined a triple into the right field corner to score DeShields with the first run of the night. Erik Castro followed with a groundout plating Aplin for a 2-0 JetHawks advantage.
The Giants immediately answered with a single run in the bottom of the first to trim the Lancaster lead in half. Joe Panik started the rally with a one-out walk before Pablo Sandoval grounded a single into left to put runners on first and second. Duvall followed with a single to load the bases and then Ricky Oropesa bounced into a fielder's choice as Panik scored to make it 2-1.
San Jose then tied the score with a single run in the bottom of the second. Jarrett Parker drew a leadoff walk before stealing second with two outs. Jurica then lined a single to left plating Parker to tie the game 2-2.
The Giants took their first lead with another run in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back one-out singles from Duvall and Oropesa put runners on first and second before Andrew Susac walked to load the bases. Parker then struck out, but Page followed with a line drive single to right to score Duvall for a 3-2 San Jose lead.
Marte settled down after the first inning to not allow another run for the remainder of his outing. He pitched around a two-out single in the top of the second and a one-out single in the third to keep the JetHawks off the scoreboard. After a 1-2-3 top of the fourth, Carlos Perez singled with one out in the fifth, but Marte induced the next hitter, Alex Todd, to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Concepcion relieved Marte to begin the top of the sixth and issued a one-out walk to Aplin. Aplin then stole second and advanced to third on a two-out wild pitch, however Concepcion retired Domingo Santana on a line out to left ending the inning.
Sanford followed with a perfect top of the seventh before Valdez set down Lancaster 1-2-3 in the eighth. Hall entered the game in the top of the ninth and promptly struck out Aplin and Castro for the first two outs of the inning. Santana then drew a walk to put the potential tying run on base, but Hall recovered inducing Drew Muren to ground into a fielder's choice to shortstop to finish the game.
Prior to Santana's walk, San Jose relievers had combined to set down 10 consecutive JetHawks batters.
Lancaster starter Colton Cain (0-1) suffered the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three.
