VANCOUVER BC - HO HO HOLY COW! The Vancouver Giants have entered the Christmas Break with a bang, smacking eight goals past the Swift Current Broncos in an 8-1 pounding of the East Division contenders.
Garry Nunn led the charge for the Giants tonight, as it seems that every night somebody else steps to the forefront. Nunn had two goals and two assists for four points and posted a +5 rating in the victory. Vancouver had other goals this evening by Craig Cunningham, Casey Pierro-Zabotel, Brent Regner, , Craig Schira, James Wright and Andrej Kudrna. Cody Eakin was the only Bronco to beat Tyson Sexsmith late in the second period. Travis Yonkman took the loss for the Broncos, getting pulled early in the second period after allowing 5 goals on 15 shots. Mark Guggenberger mopped up, allowing 3 goals on 24 shots in the final 38 minutes of play. .
Vancouver enters the break with a phenomenal 28-2-0-3 record for 59 points through just 33 games. The Giants have a 21 point lead over the Kelowna Rockets in the BC Division derby and have now opened up a 11 point lead over 2nd place Tri City in the Western Conference standings. Vancouver is just three points back of the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL overall standings. Vancouver has four games in hand on the Eastern Conference leaders.
The players and coaching staff will now disperse for a week and return to the Lower Mainland for a practice on Boxing Day evening, 7pm at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Vancouver begins their second half of the season on December 27th versus the Prince George Cougars.
