THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... begin a four-game series at South Division leader Rancho Cucamonga Friday evening. The Giants currently boast the top overall record in the California league with an 11-3 mark after sweeping a series from Modesto earlier this week. This series with the Quakes opens a seven-game road trip for San Jose.
Top Pitching Staffs...This weekend features a match-up between the top two pitching clubs in the California League. The Quakes enter the series with a spectacular 2.93 team ERA while the Giants sit right behind them at 3.07.
Dave McKae...Pitcher Dave McKae has been San Jose's hottest starting pitcher of late. Mckae, who is slated to get the ball on Sunday afternoon, fired 6 2/3 scoreless innings in his last start - a victory over Modesto last Tuesday. For the season, McKae owns a 1.62 ERA (3 ER/16.2 IP) with just three walks and 20 strikeouts. Opponents are batting just .220 against the Danville, California native.
Offensive Leaders...Pablo Sandoval and Antoan Richardson have been the two hottest hitters for the Giants in recent games. Sandoval, who splits time between catcher and first base, brings a seven-game hitting streak into the series (.370 AVG). Meanwhile, Richardson went 5-for-9 (.556 AVG) in the Modesto series and reached base a total of eight times in 12 plate appearances. Richardson currently co-leads the squad in stolen bases with Emmanuel Burriss (7). Catcher Barry Gunther (.333 AVG) and second baseman Brad Boyer (.313 AVG) sport the top batting averages on the club while left fielder Ben Copeland has the most hits (18).
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes...The Quakes enter the series in first place in the South Division with an excellent 10-4 record. Rancho Cucamonga split a four-game set with the Giants last weekend in San Jose before taking two-of-three at Lake Elsinore earlier this week. Closer Darren O'Day leads the California League in saves with six (in six opportunities) and has yet to allow a run in 7 1/3 innings. Center fielder Brad Coon is tops in the league in stolen bases with ten while also hitting at a solid .327 clip. Meanwhile, Brok Butcher, who will start on Saturday evening, recorded a complete-game victory last Sunday against the Giants. All total, Butcher has surrendered just one run in 14 1/3 innings this season.
