GETTING TO KNOW, ANTHONY HINES (1/13/04)

Interview by Mike McCaffrey, Director of Communications

Anthony Hines, a rookie WR/DB in training camp with the Firebirds, took a few seconds after practice to answer some quick questions. Hines, 25, is a two-year veteran of arenafootball2 playing for both the Cape Fear Wildcats (2003) and Roanoke Steam (2002) during his career. Last season he caught 114 passes (4th in af2) for 1,575 yards (3rd in af2) and 26 touchdowns. He totaled 2,343 all-purpose yards en route to leading the Wildcats to their second straight Atlantic Division crown. In 2002, Hines had 60 catches for 776 yards and six touchdowns, in just ten games. He began playing professional football following a standout career at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC.

MM: How do you like what you have seen of Indianapolis so far?

AH: Since I've been here it's been OK. I really haven't had a chance to see the city entirely, but I hear it's really a great city. (granted Anthony has been practicing or meeting since he stepped off the plane)

MM: What is the temperature in Winston Salem, NC right now?

AH: It's about 45 degrees in the daytime and about 20-25 at night. (A high of 37 degrees is expected in Indianapolis today)

MM: How do you compare a training camp in af2 to the AFL?

AH: The camps here in the AFL are more disciplined and organized.

MM: Have you been in camp in the AFL before this? If so, which team(s)?

AH: No, but I was invited to a couple of private, invite-only workouts. (Hines was signed after attending a closed, invite workout for coach DeBerg back in November).

MM: Where did you get the nickname Amp?

AH: It's a childhood nickname. My mom gave me it because I used to be very active, hyper, and get into a lot of things. So she started calling me "Amp". ("Amp" has shown that his energy level is still up there, running by Firebirds defensive backs during days one and two)

MM: You mentioned Florida State as your favorite team growing up, what do you think of Adrian McPherson so far through two days?

AH: So far I've noticed he has a great ball, good touch and he is confident in what he is doing overall. You can tell he will be a good quarterback in this league and possibly at the next level if that is what he chooses to do.

MM: What do you like about Coach DeBerg's coaching style that is different from other coaches?

AH: He is very confident in his system, which could be very effective in this league. He is also very interactive, teaching us all his system the way he wants it done.

MM: What do you think of the competition at the WR/DB position?

AH: Different. I am just trying to get used to playing DB, being that I have never really played the position before. (Anthony was an OS in Cape Fear and a WR/LB in Roanoke)
