Desmond Howard to Appear at Rampage Home Opener

The Grand Rapids Rampage have announced that former University of Michigan and Detroit Lions receiver/returner Desmond Howard will appear at the team's February 14th home opener against the Colorado Crush. Howard will sign autographs for approximately one hour prior to the 12:00 noon kick-off. He will also participate in the opening coin toss.

Howard won the 1991 Heisman Trophy after a stellar season with Michigan in which he caught 61 passes for 950 yards and 19 touchdowns. He later became the fourth overall pick in the 1992 draft by the Washington Redskins. Howard spent twelve seasons in the NFL and played in more than 150 games with the Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, and Detroit Lions. During his NFL career, Howard complied over 10,000 return yards and took eight returns back for scores.

Howard's signature game was Super Bowl XXXI, when he set Super Bowl records for combined returns (ten), combined return yards (244), and longest kickoff return for a touchdown (99), en route to becoming the first special teams player ever named Super Bowl MVP. He is one of just four Heisman Trophy winners ever to be named Super Bowl MVP.

While at the University of Michigan, Howard became the first receiver in Big Ten conference history to lead the league in scoring with 138 points. Beyond winning the Heisman Trophy, in 1991 Howard received the Maxwell Award, the AP Offensive Player of the Year award, the Walter Camp Award, and was named All-American.
