Germany Battles France Today at 4 p.m. ET
June 26, 2015 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) News Release
CHICAGO (June 26, 2015) - Nadine Angerer looks to extend her international career as Germany meets France today at 4 p.m. ET on FOX in the quarterfinals of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Angerer, who will retire from international soccer following the tournament in Canada, made two saves to help Germany to a 4-1 victory over Sweden on Saturday in the Round of 16 as the two-time World Cup champions advanced to the quarterfinals for the seventh time in seven appearances at the World Cup.
Celia Sasic scored twice, while fellow striker Anja Mittag and midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan each added a goal as the Germans coasted against Sweden. Sasic and Mittag are now tied in the race for the golden boot with five goals each.
"We played well, but we are not yet world champions, and we now have to focus on likely France," Germany coach Silvia Neid told reporters after the game.
The Portland Thorns FC goalkeeper and national team captain will be earning her 144th international cap in the match against France on Friday.
Germany holds an 8-3-2 advantage over their European counterparts in all-time meetings - including a 4-2 victory over the French in a group stage match at the 2011 World Cup in which Angerer played.
However, Angerer was also in net for the most recent match between the two countries - a 2-0 victory for France in a friendly held in Offenbach, Germany on October 14.
The Germans come into the contest with a nine-match unbeaten streak in all competitions and having only lost once in 12 matches since suffering the set back against their neighbors back in October.
Angerer, who has five shutouts during her NWSL career - including one this season, will be motivated to help her country into the semifinal at the World Cup for the third time in the past four tournaments. Germany was eliminated at the quarterfinal stage at the 2011 tournament by Japan in a game that went to extra time.
The winner of the match Friday will move on to face either the United States or China in a semifinal that will also be held at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal on Tuesday, June 30.
