Flint Generals News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The string of losses in shootouts for the Flint Generals is finally over. Greg Bullock scored one of two goals in the shootout to lift the Generals past the Port Huron Icehawks 5-4 at McMorran Place Arena on Saturday night. The Generals had previously gone 0 for 9 in shootouts until that game and scored twice in the competition while Port Huron were held off the score sheet. Flint extended its third place lead on the Muskegon Fury to three points with the victory and have a chance at back to back wins on Sunday afternoon at home at Perani Arena. The Generals rallied from a two-goal first period deficit and a one goal third period deficit and played extremely well. Kris Mallette scored his first goal of the season for the Generals in the third period to tie the game 3-3 and then Michel Beausoleil gave the visitors the lead 4-3 midway through the frame. The Icehawks would tie the game up in the final 2 minutes setting the stage for overtime where the Generals dominated but couldn't score. The Generals welcomed back Kris Mallette and Greg Bullock to the line-up after missing time due to injuries and both made their presence felt early. Port Huron raced out to a 2-0 first period lead before the game was 6 minutes old. The Icehawks had a goal called back when the officials determined that Port Huron had kicked the puck across the goal line. But the Generals rallied back with two goals in the final minute. First Josef Fojtik's back hand shot went through the legs of Marty Magers and Greg Bullock was there to tap it in and make it 2-1. Martin Ondrej tied the game when he put the puck into an empty net on a scramble in front. Greg Bullock set up the second goal. It was an exciting second period with both teams skating fast up and down the ice and having good chances to score. Port Huron had one of the best chances on a breakaway when Tab Lardner was stopped by the big toe of Eric Marvin. It was set up by a huge open ice hit by Ryan Jorde on Joe Markuson. However, the Icehawks took a 3-2 lead on some scrambly play in the final two minutes. The Generals are back at home at Perani Arena tomorrow afternoon when they host the Bloomington Prairie Thunder at a special start time of 4 pm. There will be a post game jersey auction of the Generals game worn white home jerseys. McCarty's Army will also be in attendance to sell merchandise and proceeds will benefit the McCarty Cancer Foundation. Tickets available at the Ticketmaster Box Office or on line at www.flintgenerals.com or by calling 744-0580.
