Generals Weekly Recap

October 19, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) - Flint Generals News Release

FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals kicked off their 40th season of professional hockey by splitting two home games this past weekend at Perani Arena and Event Center. Friday night's season opener was a battle between the Generals and their western Michigan rival the Muskegon Lumberjacks. The evening began with a ceremonial puck drop with the new IHL Commissioner, and former NHL player, Dennis Hextall. Tyler Howells kicked off the scoring for the night with a power play goal less than three minutes into the game. Captain Tony Tuzzolino and Alternate Captain, and returnee, Greg Bullock also scored; giving Flint the 3-1 victory.

Saturday night, the Generals hosted the Quad City Mallards. The first period was tight, with only 14 shots on goal between the two teams the twenty minutes concluded with no score. One of the best chances of the first was given to Tuzzolino, when he was awarded a penalty shot with less than four minutes to play. The Mallards would strike with a goal at the 3:58 mark of the second period, and would get two more goals in the third before the Generals would get their loan goal. John Mori found the back of the net at 19:28, keeping the Mallards from getting the shutout.

A few of the Generals players spent Sunday at McCurdy Park in Corunna, MI participating in the 4th Annual Exhibition game featuring the Generals vs. High School Teams. The event is put on by the Recreational Inline Hockey League, and gives fans a chance to see their favorite team take on their favorite high school.

There are a few Generals fast approaching personal milestones. Jean-Francois Labbe is just two games shy of playing in career game number 900, 898 came in Friday's season opener. Pascal Rheaume is looking to reach the 600 goal mark this season, with just 20 goals to go.

The Generals will be back in action this Friday, Oct. 23rd when they head to Port Huron for their first road game of the season. The two teams saw each other twice in exhibition play but this will be the first regular season matchup. The two preseason games were rather different, the first went to a shootout with the IceHawks being the victors, but the following night the Generals peppered the Port Huron goalies, finding the back of the net 6 times. Then on Saturday, Oct. 24th Flint will host Port Huron in the second game of a home-and-home series.

Tickets are available at the Perani Arena Ticket Office or through Ticketmaster ( For more information visit the Generals' website at
